Eggs hatched today under broody hen

New Hampshire hen went broody and I put 15 eggs under her. So far today looks like 12-13 have hatched. That’s probably all that will hatch. The roosters were Buff Orpington and hens were a variety of breeds, Amber Stars, New Hampshire, Buff Orpington, Black Minorca, Rhode Island Red, and Black...

    Debate! Hybrids or heritage chickens?

Depends on what you want. Crossbred layers like ISA Brownor Amber Link are great dependable layers but will not hold up as long. To me if I were very limited in number of birds I could have. I would go with a commercial type crossbred layer or production type Rhode Island Reds. That way the...

Best Chicken Breeds to Breed for Selling?

I agree with what NatJ said in the post above. Having a breed or breed s that the big hatcheries don’t have, or have limited numbers of them, could be beneficial to set you apart. Breeds like. Black Copper Marans, several have those but they seem to sell out fairly fast. Penedeseca ( probably...

    Resulting color?

Have 2 hens setting and several of the eggs are by white Amber Star hens, ghe roosters are Buff Orpingtons. In the past I’ve had some white leghorn hens with a Barred Rock rooster and the resulting chicks were pretty much white like the leghorn hens with maybe a random grey or black spot but...

    Breeds for tiny flocks?

Honestly about any hens from mainstream chicken breeds would probably be ok. We are in KY, probably somewhat similar weather to MO. I prefer standard clean legged varieties. Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire, Australorp are all dependable breeds with sone of those...

    Question about rabbits?

We currently have a pair of New Zealand White rabbits and a litter of their babies. The plan is to keep a doe from that litter and bring in another male. We are wanting to add some color by bringing in a different male. What would the color patterns be from a white doe and black male? Would...

What age to put chicks outside with no heat?

Our chicks are just short of 5 weeks old, its mid 80’s to 90 highs and around 60 for lows at night. Would it be ok to go ahead and move them, 25 chicks to an outside coop?

They look like pullets to me .

    Black Australorps 16 weeks

They are all pullets. At that age roosters would have significantly larger red comb and wattles

Where can I Buy This New Chicken Breed?

Not familiar with that chicken breed. The term Holstein Frieshian is the name of the Holstein breed of cattle that most people all people just call Holstein. Then as already mentioned there are Friesian Horses too. Not sure but may even be Friesian sheep. My guess is that there is either a...

Best personality and laying chicken for begginner chicken owners

I have looked at some of the websites of commercial chicken suppliers and have seen that the do have now commercial strains of dark brown, green and blue egg layers so that will probably become a thing in the grocery stores too, but we haven’t seen them in stores around here yet. I’ve never had...

Best personality and laying chicken for begginner chicken owners

It’s pretty hard to make a profit selling eggs. We have a time keeping a steady supply of customers. Seems like we have eggs going to waste this time of year, but sometimes hardly enough for ourselves during molt in late fall early winter If you want maximum production with fairly quiet...

    What's your favorite/friendliest breed

They are a commercial crossbred layer. From my understanding they are the opposite cross of a Red Star or ISA Brown. They are the result of a White Rock type rooster and Rhode Island Red type hen.
