I have a what’s supposed to be 4 month old Maran that’s huge. I got her and 2 polish chickens that are supposed to be 2-3 months old. The Maran is too big to be with the polish hens. She may even be bigger than my 3 year olds. Has anyone had a less stressful way of introducing new hens to your...
I also want to thank you both for posting this. My Svart hona injured the top layer of her beak too. No blood and a little closer but she’s having the same trouble pecking at food as you mentioned. Around same age as well. I’ve read horrible things like culling might be necessary so I’m going...
I have 6, 8-10 week old chicks -2 cockerels, 4 pullets.
They’ve been on chick starter food 24%. The bag says at this age they can be on grower/finisher but they never moved to the starter/grower, they were always just on the starter. Is it okay to move right to grower/finisher from this...
The black and white one is a Spitzhauben. That is the one that tries to crow. The two brown are Easter Eggers (I think someone on here mentioned a breed I’ll have to check) and the black one is a Svart Hona. The brown one has a bigger and wider comb than the other one.
Started out with six chicks. The Spitzhauben is definitely a rooster as he has attempted to crow at a very young age (about four weeks). The other two show roo characteristics from what I’m reading. Fingers crossed that I’m wrong or if I’m not wrong, we stop at three roos 😔.
I have two Easter...
Hello. I know it’s like three years later but I have 2 Svarts at about 6 weeks old and thought for sure one (so far) was a roo. Based on your photos, there may be home but I’m not too sure based on it’s comb. Beyonce is beautiful btw.
I have chicks from 12 days old to maybe 3 weeks old right now in the brooder. They seem bored. I’m looking to possibly make a small temporary dust bath I can take out once they’re done using it. When water spills, they try to make a dust bath out of the wet newspaper. I’ve read several forums...
I have close to the same set up. Our lamp is also hanging on a wooden rod with string above the tote and has a cage over the bulb because I am concerned about the same things you mentioned.
