She only has chickens now because she lost her ducks to a predator over a year ago. Kind of ironic she was guilting me about not free ranging them when she had the same issue. She said she’d rather them live a nice life free ranging even if it means getting eaten by a predator. Everyone has...
Thank you! That’s the plan, try to let them out every once in a while so they can free range. We only have 4 ducks so I think the 16x12 run should be big enough for them!
@DuckyDonna Thank you for this, made me feel a lot better. Sounds like your duckies have a great life and a wonderful set up!!! The predator problem just is too much for me to even risk letting them out alone. I can’t do it. I’m going to try to let them out a few times a week for an hour or two...
I am here to post again! Of course. Haha.
In my last few posts I’ve been talking about our duck run we built and posted some pics, it’s 16x12.5. The coop is on the outside with the door open to the inside. Everything is predator proof.
My reason for posting now is because I was talking to a...
Hi! We have 4 Pekins. 2 male/2 female. I realize the ratio is off and I am trying to put feelers out to see if anyone would be interested in both males or even just one. I live in Massachusetts but I am certainly willing to drive given that the ducks will be provided a nice, loving home. I am...
@Miss Lydia @Isaac 0 @3bird Yep, I leave out a bowl of chick grit for them! I was out there with them for a good 4 hours yesterday to observe and like you all said, I do think they just fiddled with them. I did not notice any duckies swallowing rocks too big for them. :thumbsup Think I am just...
Sounds good! Mine are also 6.5 weeks. We’re outside right now and I’m watching super closely and it does seem like they’re just billing them and spitting them out. My fiancé said he thought he saw one of the ducks eat a rock yesterday so I was a little worried!
@Miss Lydia , @Isaac 0 , @416bigbore , @3bird 1 more question that I bet someone knows the answer to! So, we’ve been bringing the ducks outside during the day and supervising them because the run is not 100% complete but I noticed they’re really digging up rocks. I know it’s totally normal for...
@Miss Lydia @416bigbore : Great points about the window. I’ll be sure to put hardware cloth over that too. The rest of the pen everything is covered with hardware cloth :) He did put hardware cloth underground too so diggers can’t dig. If there’s anything else to do or if that’s not enough...
Hey! So now that our Henry is on the mend...my fiancé is finishing up our duck run. I wanted to write in to see if anyone had any thoughts or tips on how to improve our run. Or, if something looks off and you have a better idea, please let me know. The ducks will mostly live in this pen as our...
Yes, we’re there now! So it WAS a giant blood feather. Vet is going to wrap him herself to help with the angel wing, thankfully! She says she doesn’t want to pluck the blood feather right now because of how large it is, and given the fact it stopped bleeding relatively quick. Obviously if the...
My plan is to call the vet tomorrow morning even if he is doing better and just ask if he can be seen (they saw him when he was a little baby) and have her check out the broken blood feather and also ask if she can wrap him herself since she probably has much better technique than I! Haha. Since...
It has stopped bleeding luckily and it stopped bleeding rather quickly too so I’m happy about that but I do have corn starch on hand in case it does start again! I’m really worried about overnight and him picking it while I’m asleep and not aware. This sounds crazy but I might just have to set...
Yeah, I’m thinking he got it caught on something in the 1 min I of course walked in to bring them out more food. The bleeding has stopped and looks like it has clotted. I tried to look to see where the broken blood feather was but I honestly couldn’t really tell. It didn’t help he was squirming...
