    What breed for egg laying?

Those seem like great choices. I've had leghorns in the past and was very happy with the constant supply of eggs our family got :) Do let us know how your experience with the Orpingtons goes, I am thinking of adding some to my flock too :)

    Another coop from scraps.

Normally I like to stay around but sometimes if I am late with work I can't get back in time I think it would be very helpful. I might just have to bite the bullet and go with the off-the-shelf unit then. Thank you for your help :)

    Another coop from scraps.

Looks good and glad to hear your last one has been predator proof! I am currently struggling with predators so considering getting an automatic chicken coop door something like this. Any ideas on how you would go about making it out of recycled parts?

Moving with chickens to a new state

Although I don't have experience of moving them that far, but when I had to move my flock of 8 a couple hundred miles away, we used dog crates to drive them, making sure they have enough space to stand straight and move around a bit, but keeping them safe from being jostled during the ride...

    Broody Hen Thread!

They might be a bit too many, because not all of them would be able to get the warmth needed, and even if they do, it may be very difficult for her to keep them warm once they're hatched and growing. All the best :)

Against the odds hatching thread (with pictures and questions)

So happy for you, I'd used a similar setup and it seemed to work pretty well for me :) A night off the ground is a big step, they'll slowly get around to the ramp too :) All of mine were a bit scared of the ramp for the first few days, but they got there eventually (Y) All the best :)

    Are my chicks okay?!

I'd probably get an incubator thermometer for some peace of mind. I remember I was just a bundle of nerves when I got my first ones, but it does get better, you got this! :thumbsup

Not sure if this would go here, but seemed behavioral? What toys/items will help keep my chickens active?

Yes that might be a concern, although my flock seemed to be only interested in taking it apart and not eating it However, a vegetable pinata might be a good option too or a shaker for their seeds perhaps? There are plenty of DIY instructions for those online, I believe :)

You can probably use hanging toys, like a bunch of shredded paper! Yeah, it's meant to be destroyed, but if you use bright colored papers, it'll be interesting and they can chew on it for a while. You can also perhaps use some loofah-type material? Hope this works :)
