Out with the old, in with the a new flock

Figured out the mystery chicks were Barred Rocks. Still a really nice hen at maturity.

What did you do in the garden today?

Agreed, mint is a great treat for our chickens. We had mint in containers next to the run and had some OPS! cherry tomato plants that we allowed to grow so they could peck some extra treats themselves.

Out with the old, in with the a new flock

I'm back!. Last of our White Leghorns and ISO Browns are gone and the Mrs decided on getting a new flock. Mix of Jersey Giant, Cinnamon Queen, and some other type (I say she got silver laced Wyandotte, but I'm being told I'm wrong) totally 9 chicks. Trying out a brooder heat panel instead of...

What did you do in the garden today?

I wish my seedlings looked that good. Failed to transplant my 1" seedlings to 4" containers timely and suffering from lack of plant growth. I'm running about 2 weeks behind for everything but my bell peppers. Same. Just dig out half of the cold compost and rinse and repeat each year.

What did you do in the garden today?

Must be at night for the black light to work. The hornworm's green color is fluorescent and the color POPS! against the green color of the tomato stems & leaves. Little suckers love to hide under leaves so you kind of need to look at things at different angles.

Harvesting my Chicken Run Compost - Black Gold!

For those with covered runs like me, how much and how often do you water it? As the location of the run is on top of a hill and doesn't get much water drainage under the pine shaving. I live in Zone 8a, run is 10'x10', 6" depth of pine shavings and whatever plants/veggies I throw in there, and...

What did you do in the garden today?

Put some eggshells and veggie scraps into the upper raised garden bed and shoo' d my Australian Shepherd away from my Roma tomatoes (she like stealing them off the vine, eating a bite, and leaving the in the yard for the other two Aussies to repeat her process.

Covering raised bed for 5 months, safe2 add chicken poop directly?

Come November I will stop growing veggies in one of our raised garden beds until April and I was wondering if I could top the bed directly with chicken manure safely; I will cover it with black plastic. If yes, should I wet the soil before I put the black plastic over the garden? I do DLM...

When will they start back laying eggs?

Chickens have started laying much more frequent now that the days are longer and it's getting warmer (minus this weekend it being 22 and 32 lows) Averaging 4 to 7 a day the past week, so the girls are back in their groove.

When will they start back laying eggs?

They went from 9 to 10 before the molt, to 2 to 5 Nov/December when they molted to early February, and since March it's none to 1 daily. My setup is pretty darn secure with 1/4 hardware like this site suggests, mice (small) are the only things I've seen and we're taking care of them. Found...

When will they start back laying eggs?

When will the hens begin laying regularly? Is it still the down time due to day light for them to be laying? Or has my flock of 11 hens hit their wall? White leghorns and ISA Brown hens, born May 16, 2000. Went through their first molt last year/this year. Egg production declined of...

    Duck Diapers

If I hadn't seen a pet duck with a diaper being walked around on a leash at Clemson football tailgating for the past few years, I wouldn't think some of ya'll had been sniffing the chicken/duck poop too much when I first saw this thread. It's the wildest thing to watch, but the duck was super...

Ground oyster shells vs. egg shells

We've pretty well come to the conclusion that the egg eater(s) were being opportunistic, as we stopped getting eggs early in the morning and were waiting till 3 to 4 pm to get the all at once (we've got 2 or 3 that like to lay late in the day). Since we started gathering the eggs at 7 to 8 am...

what type of waterer "nipple" or "trough"?

I'd wait till about week 3 or 4 before introducing them. Pretty much just have to take their little beaks and tap it on the nipple to get water out and they do the rest.

    Fake Brown egg ideas?

It's deliberate. Wife has found 2 that the top of the egg (short pointy part) was eaten. May go the way of 20% protein again and continue the oyster shell free choice like I've been doing.
