Help! Hen's vent covered in maggots. Treatment?

Well, I didn't kill the larvae. I just washed her out, and because they hadn't penetrated her skin, that was that. I hope you have the same experience!

Help! Hen's vent covered in maggots. Treatment?

Floppy turned out just fine! Treating her was disgusting and laborious, but we were lucky that the maggots had not penetrated her skin. Once they were washed off and she had a little isolation time to recuperate, she was the same old chicken once again. A happy ending!

Help! Hen's vent covered in maggots. Treatment?

Good news on this. As far as I can see, the bathing yesterday took care of the maggots. Floppy's rear is clean and she is in isolation, mostly sitting around on towels in the cage--sometimes under the heat lamp, sometimes away from it. What's notable is that it still appears that there was no...

Help! Hen's vent covered in maggots. Treatment?

After some more research I've found this appears to be Flystrike. Helpful information on how to treat: Flystrike Is a condition affecting mainly sheep, deer and rabbits, but is not uncommon in poultry. This article deals with Flystrike in hens. It occurs when flies lay eggs in the dirty...

Help! Hen's vent covered in maggots. Treatment?

Floppy is a 2-year-old Buff Orpington, overweight and prone to problems. One of a flock of three hens, all together since hatch. Lately she has been mostly sitting down, not eating constantly as she normally does, and generally lethargic. Sleeping in the nest box. Last night I noticed she...

ISO help w/ diagnosis and recommendation for antibiotics

Yes, I've read a lot about different respiratory illnesses, I just can't identify exactly which one killed Pinky and might be ailing this next chicken. From what I read in the Storey book it sounds like pneumonia. Asked my vet for Tylan. he said he couldn't get it, but would give me an...

ISO help w/ diagnosis and recommendation for antibiotics

Decided to quarantine her at least until I leave. Put her inside with a heat lamp and she seems remarkably okay. Eating regular old feed and scratch, drinking some. Her breathing seems regular, too. Any thoughts or suggestions, I'm open to them. Still thinking I'll try antibiotics tomorrow if...

ISO help w/ diagnosis and recommendation for antibiotics

I'm afraid this story has taken a turn for the worse. I'd love your help. My hen had been quarantined and under a heat lamp, etc., for 12 hours. I was just about to go get her antibiotics, when I found her dead. She seems to have struggled at least for a moment at the end, as her food was...

ISO help w/ diagnosis and recommendation for antibiotics

I have a sick 2 1/2 year old Black Australorp named Pinky. Sick for ~24 hours now. Since last night she has been in a cage, inside, under a heat lamp. Symptoms: - Labored breathing, at times gurgly sounding - Sleepy, droopy eyes - Pale comb - Sleeping all the time, head down (sometimes on the...

    N. California: Rescued chickens need a home

I hope that people can recognize that these birds are not "damaged"--well, not irreparably so. I remember being at a friend's farm on the day that he had 500 laying hens delivered from an egg factory. They were in REALLY bad shape--some with no feathers at all--so I was shocked to see that in...

    Chicken wheezing then hiccup

An update on my hen, and a question: Update: I signed into this post because I had a hiccuping, then coughing and wheezing, and now difficult breathing chicken. Escalated quickly, over two days. This afternoon I brought her to the vet and he could not identify the problem. Without doing very...

    N. California: Rescued chickens need a home

This was emailed to me earlier today: Marin Humane Society saves 140 hens from California factory farm Cage free at last: Hundreds of hens spared from slaughter (NOVATO, CALIF., December 8, 2008) — 140 hens – just days away from slaughter – arrived at the Marin Humane Society this weekend from...

Help! Looking down my hen's throat (and help with wheezing?)

Thanks, Ruth. I'm more worried now, as I just checked on them in the PM and she is gasping and wheezing. I had quarantined her in a cage earlier today but she just freaked out--it didn't seem like a therapeutic place for her. She's in with the rest and I put in a heat lamp. Hoping she makes it...

Help! Looking down my hen's throat (and help with wheezing?)

With some more research I was able to find that this is normal--there's an eating hole (which I saw) and a windpipe hole. Now I wonder if it's bad that I didn't immediately see the windpipe hole? Also confused about whether an impacted crop can impair her ability to breathe and cause wheezing...

Help! Looking down my hen's throat (and help with wheezing?)

Proud to say I (somehow) singlehandedly managed to look down my hen's throat. With my headlamp shining in I saw something that seemed strange: the opening through which she was breathing was a hole only half the width of her throat; the rest was closed and yellowish/off-white. Is that normal...

    Chicken wheezing then hiccup

So, tiffwilhelm, do I understand correctly that what your chicken had before (and again recently) was gapeworm? Because your chicken's symptoms sound just like my chicken's (and those of many people here, it seems). Would be helpful to know. If it is gapeworm, must I take her to the vet in...

    Chicken wheezing then hiccup

And now... another chicken with this exact symptom. Nine-month-old BO. Yesterday I thought she had just a cute/weird hiccup, today I noticed wheezing. Undiminished appetite, no discharge. Only symptom to add is that her eyes seem to dilate and un-dilate frequently--like she's having trouble...

Why has my hen's personality changed overnight?

Well, good news! She's back to normal and I have no idea why. She never laid an egg. Who knows what was wrong. I've put oyster shell in their feed now in order to minimize the possibility of any one of them getting eggbound in the future. (The thought of KY jelly and a manual extraction was...

    Brain-damaged chicken?

Well, good news! She's back to normal and I have no idea why. She never laid an egg. Who knows--maybe she just wanted a bath. I've put oyster shell in their feed now in order to minimize the possibility of any one of them getting eggbound in the future. (The thought of KY jelly and a manual...
