    Cochin mohawk

I had a Cochin hen with a Mohawk. We used to wonder about it all the time. It was so cute, but we don't have any idea where it came from.

    Flies!

I use fans in the coop and run. I no longer have a fly or mosquito problem. They also keep my chickens cooler during these hot and humid days.

    Texas

Everything is good here. The storm veered East and we were just on the edge. We were so lucky, but I feel bad for those that were hit. Praying they get their power soon. It's so hot and humid. Thanks for thinking about us.

    Texas

I'm very worried about my chickens. It's not a matter of if we lose our power, it's just when and for how long. We're outside of Nacogdoches and because of the heat in the summer, our run is under a lot of trees. After going through Katrina and Rita I know the devastation of a hurricane in...

    Cleaning cecal poop

I cover it with PDZ, let it set a minute and scrape it off with my putty knife. It comes right off and I drop it into my poop bucket. If it needs cleaning I wipe it with a damp rag, but it usually doesn't need to be cleaned.

    Slow Developing Chicken

I have a chick that had a difficult time at first. It was slow growing the first three weeks. Now, at six weeks, the chick is doing much better and growing by the day. Maybe some just take a little more time to adjust to life.

    One Chick Hatched Others Didn't

I have three hens that each hatched one chick. They all did great. I kept mama and chick in brooders until the chicks feathered out and let them integrate into the flock. The chicks just kept close to their mamas and still do. It seems that as long as they have their mama they are fine. I...

    New chicks and hot weather...

I'm in East Texas and it is hotter than Hades! It is still hot at night here. I have to keep the fan on in the coop at night. I have a six week old and a five week old in the coop. I also have a five week old in a brooder with her mama. They definitely do not need a heat. I worry that they...
