coccidiosis my old nemesis (non urgent)

Ok so here's where I'm at. No one local has any corid; called the two feed stores near me, one if which is a Tractor Supply, and they don't even have a store nearby who can transfer. They only have pellets, no liquid or powder. I've ordered a bottle on Amazon but it wont get here until Friday...

coccidiosis my old nemesis (non urgent)

Ok, do you think I should go ahead and treat the others with sulfa drug or just the worst one? Should I do a drench for the sickest?

coccidiosis my old nemesis (non urgent)

I'm mostly looking to get affirmation that I'm doing the right thing here. I've had SUCH a bad time with coccidiosis in the past that I'm fearful of it even though I'm prepared. My current batch of chicks is just about to turn 10 weeks old. They've been outside in the main run (segregated from...

    tree sap/resin in chick's feathers

Bleh annoying situation. My property is covered in Mountain Cedar (Ashe Juniper). I have a new batch of chicks (5 weeks old) who I've been starting to let outside. They have a little sectioned off run that I thought was free of debris, but a few moments ago I heard one of them screaming and ran...

    Chicks on damp ground?

Thank you all for the advice! Unfortunately they do not have full access, they are in a brooder in my garage. I agree that letting them choose would be a better situation. I ended up giving them a 30 min supervised outing yesterday. I really want them to have outside time, sunlight and getting...

    Chicks on damp ground?

Are we saying mid to high 70s is too cold?

    Chicks on damp ground?

Hello all. I've got a batch of 4 week old chicks. Its been rainy and cool here the last few days, but for now at least the rain has stopped and the temps are in the mid 70s. The ground is still damp from the rain, but no pooling water/etc. Opinions on letting them outside for short periods in...

Various things that make a hen stop laying?

Well, she laid today. Went nearly 2 weeks without, so I'm very relieved. The egg was a little small but otherwise normal (good shell, had a yolk when cracked). So I guess it was just stress.

Various things that make a hen stop laying?

I suppose I can't rule that out entirely. I haven't seen any evidence either way.

Various things that make a hen stop laying?

Not sure, she's a little young but I guess not crazy young for the first molt (around 14 months). She doesn't look like she's losing feathers. She's the only one I have who lays white eggs so its easy to tell when her eggs are missing. So far she seems otherwise normal. Poops are a little...

Various things that make a hen stop laying?

One of my hens stopped laying about 10 days ago. She's a little over a year old (born March last year) and has been my most consistent layer, 5-6 eggs a week. So far this hen seems normal. She'll go sit in the nesting box for 30 mins, maybe an hour, but no egg. She doesn't go in the box...

    Bloody cornea/eye

She ended up being ok. I'm not sure if there was lasting damage, but the eye itself eventually cleared up and isn't filled with blood anymore. The hen is still alive and doing just fine as of me typing this!

Mystery illnesses continue (not urgent but help appreciated)

Necropsy came back, it was cancer. Ovarian carcinoma. Extremely sad but somewhat of a relief that it was nothing that might have been contagious to the others.

Looking for Heritage breed hens in Austin, Texas

Callahans buys from Ideal and their inventory rotates regularly. If you watch their FB page they usually post with an inventory list of what’s coming it. Firehouse feeds in Briggs usually has chicks. Agreed that Austin Backyard Poultry is an active FB group and people are regularly selling there.

Mystery illnesses continue (not urgent but help appreciated)

I hate making these kinds of posts but I feel its better to update in case someone finds this thread in the future. My poor hen passed away this morning. We thought things were getting better, she was eating on her own again and while not back to normal, didn't seem quite as bad. Then yesterday...

Brazen rat (ID?) -added pics (semi graphic)

Went with the idea of sectioning off part of the run. It worked, got him. Added some pictures to the first post and will include them here. Anyone rat savvy and can ID this guy? I'm not so sure its actually a brown rat, but its for sure not a roof rat. Image 1 Image 2 -Warning that the rat is...

Brazen rat (ID?) -added pics (semi graphic)

A bucket trap is probably my best bet if I can't figure out a safe (for the birds) way to snap trap. I'm considering sectioning off a portion of the run during the day and trapping just that area the birds can't reach. No more dogs, no poisons. I have cameras (thus the images I included). I...

Brazen rat (ID?) -added pics (semi graphic)

I'm no stranger to rats. Roof rats are everywhere here and I go through cycles of eliminating them from the run area (the coop is rat proof). All the chicken food and water is stored in metal trash bins at night so its rare to see more than a stray individual here and there, and we trap (victor...

Mystery illnesses continue (not urgent but help appreciated)

Seems like it. When I go and check on her she has solid food in her crop, whereas the last few days its been completely empty each time I've checked unless I've given a tube feeding.

Mystery illnesses continue (not urgent but help appreciated)

3 full days on doxy and she regained her apatite and is eating on her own again. Her comb has some color again too. I don't want to get excited but maybe the doxy caught whatever was messing with her. Fingers crossed.
