How do you get chickens to stop being so skittish?

The easiest way to get your chickens to used to you is take a foot stool in and just sit with them and talk to them. I find that this helps. Just remember to take it out again with you. Also try to get them to eat out of your hand.

    Chickens price?

I would walk away from this and would wait until spring and get some day old chicks. Mostly because feed is expensive and at the age of five years they are slowing down their egg production and it won't be long and you will not get any eggs at all. I have white leghorns and I love them but these...

    Enough ventilation

I also live in the high desert and our temp runs almost as high as yours. This is what I did. 1) I cut round holes in the East side with a circle door hole saw maker, across the back every few inches at the top. 2) I cut a large rectangle piece out of the floor and put 1/4 inch wire in there...

Are fig trees fine to put in chicken coops?

I planted a fig tree where my chickens could under the shade it provided. Never once did I see a chicken nibble on any living or dead leaf. I even raised baby chicks under it to give them shade and all six chickens are all healthy. But sorry to say I removed it because it got way to big in just...

    Plants for Shade

Maybe you could plant a few large trees next to your chicken run, let them grow over and above.

Horizontal Nipple Waterers... in your opinion, yes or no?

My coop is made on stilts to give shade underneath inside a large enclosed chicken run. I used a 5 gallon water cooler "the kind that you see on a work truck" with a water float inside -like a toilet or a evaporated water cooler- and a garden water hose going up to the water cooler. I placed it...

I need all the ground cover options for my run

I use sand, then I'm able to rake all the poop up into a pile and I use a cat litter scoop and go through it and then discard it. But I only have 6 hens!

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I also use sand in the winter with about 4-6 inches of sand over a old throw rug. I clean about every other day "or so" I rake it into a pile and I use a cat litter scoop and remove the poop. I have only 6 hens all white leghorns and their coop in raised off the ground filling about 1/4 of the...

I use a hoe with the handle cut about halfway. Works for me.

Watch Chickens with Horizontal Nipples - Leave extra water source in case

I've had horizontal watering nipple for years. I made my watering system out of a extra large contractors watering cooler. The kind you see on trucks. It's made with a float and hooks up to a water faucet Line. So my chickens always have fresh water. This system works great without ant problems...

When is it to early to use DE?

Hi, my 6 little White Leghorns were born on the 11th of June, or at least thats what I was told. Yet they all seemed older from the start. Any way, when is it to early to make a DE dusting bath for them? They have been outside for about a week now because our night time temps are 70 some degrees...

Hi everyone, I just picked up 6 new baby White Leghorn chicks

Thanks, but the one thing that we don't have is electricity down at the chicken coop. But I could bring them in at night.

Hi everyone, I just picked up 6 new baby White Leghorn chicks

We just picked up our one week old chicks two days ago. We had to wait to get them because Southern CA had a bird virus. But now it is late June and where we live our temps are getting around 100% OR hotter in the day and only going down to the mid 60's at night. We have a large inclosed chicken...
