Ahhh, the math! I realize dosing has been discussed in other threads, but I'm wondering if someone would be willing to explain the math behind pour-on Ivermectin dosing. It's bugging me that I can't figure out the link.
Ivermectin dose (A): The correct dosage of topical Ivermectin for chickens...
Thanks, @casportpony. I like your method for liquid Baytril!
Since starting this thread last year, I've realized I prefer measuring Baytril (enrofloxacin) in powdered form and administering via a gel capsule.
Below, I've mapped out my math (and thinking) for a new case study. The case study...
I agree -- I wish dosing was straightforward! I know yours is an old comment, but I think for the 20% concentration, you would use half the amount we calculated in the earlier comments (because earlier we were working with a 10% concentration). Any "math people" able to confirm? :)
Thank you @thecatumbrella! Excellent suggestions. I really appreciate your suggestions. :hugs
We took a fecal sample from another hen to the vet a few months ago -- actually more like a mix of a few hens -- and the sample came back negative, but it may be time to check again. I may try a...
Thank you @DonyaQuick and @thecatumbrella! It’s so helpful to get feedback, especially when it feels like you’ve tried (almost) everything.
I’ll try to address all your points…
The run is covered overhead and has sand underfoot.
I use pine shavings sprinkled with zeolite in the coop, and...
Thanks for the update. These things can be so tricky to figure out. I’ve had luck with “pinless peepers” with persistent bullies — just have to make sure they can easily reach food and water. I’ll let you know if I crack the case with mine. Good luck!
Hi there, I'm trying to figure out the cause of persistent feather loss in two of my 3-year-old hens. Both have been excessively itching around their necks for over a year. Their feathers break off or fall out in the same spots they scratch. Feathers grow back normally after molt but are quickly...
Thank you for replying @MamasKitchen. Two of my hens have been battling feather loss for a while, and I first suspected molting and feather picking before realizing it is something else. I hope the fall molt brings fresh feathers to your hens. It's good to hear they are generally happy, despite...
Did you figure out a solution for your Ebony? I hope she is doing okay. One of my chickens has a bare neck, similar to your pictures, and is itching a lot. I've tried topical Elector PSP, thinking it mites, and topical ketoconazole cream, wondering if it could be yeast; they didn't fix the...
How are your girls doing now? @PioneerChicks @MamasKitchen
One of my hens has a bald and very itchy neck, with skin looking similar to the picture you posted. I tried topical Elector PSP, thinking it mites, and topical ketoconazole cream, wondering if it could be yeast; they didn't fix the...
Did you figure out a solution? Two of my chickens are itching and have stripped neck feathers similar to the picture you posted. I've tried topical Elector PSP, thinking it mites, and topical ketoconazole cream, wondering if it could be yeast; they didn't fix the problem. Nice coop, by the way!

I have the same question as you... did you ever find a solution? I have tried Elector PSP, thinking it was mites, and ketoconazole cream, thinking it was yeast.
I know this is an old post, but I’m proof that people are still reading it in 2025 :) The link above is now broken. Here’s the updated one, for anyone looking: https://www.birdhealth.com.au/vent-gleet
Edit: I disagree with the article’s recommendation to cull chickens who don’t quickly respond...
I read your post just as I was pulling up to the vet yesterday. I was holding Candy and feeling so heavy hearted. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to send such a comforting and kind message. The vet echoed your thoughts and I was able to make a difficult decision knowing it...
Thanks for your reply @Eggcessive. Some updates. Her crop is still massive and squishy like a balloon — bigger than yesterday. She’s drinking water but not eating anything, including favorite foods. Her poop has changed. She’s alternating between closing her eyes and looking around while not...
Thank you for taking the time to respond @coach723. Your message reads like a voice of reason and hug — the exact combo I needed.
My husband and I decided to try to drain her abdomen tonight. We weren’t expecting much because she felt so solid, not like a water balloon which is what I think of...
Thank you for your detailed response, @azygous. Very helpful!
Glad you clarified the enema question. I had my suspicions but had seen some less experienced chicken keepers recommend the practice on this site. I will steer clear of enemas and encourage others to do the same.
I hope the oral...
History
My two year old ISA Brown hen, Candy, has had persistent vent gleet for a few months. Other than a messy bum and slightly thin egg shells, she was acting normal. I added acidified copper sulfate to her water, bathed her, and gave probiotics last month, but the vent gleet continued...
