My chickens were 8 wks when I got them last year. They have been free-ranging ever since. My outside cat who is the best mouser ever, has never looked twice at the chickens. The chickens are not worried about her either.
I rinse mine in warm water just before I use them. If they have a lot of debris on them, I'll gently wipe them off (with my fingers or a hand towel) before putting them in the fridge.
This is a good site with alot of nice people and a wealth of information. Don't let one bad experience...

Yup, mine are out all day long in 100 degree temps.
I collect them when I get home from work around 5pm, and I have had to wait until the next day to get them.
I've never had a problem.
I have made nest boxes for mine also, but they have never laid in them. My three hens come and go as they please. They have a nice barn with about 5" of pine shavings. One hen will lay in a corner of the barn with a nest she made herself from the shavings. The other two lay up against the...
