You can get free wooden pallets at most medical supply. I built my coop almost free between the pallets, freewindows and door from Craigs list and used traler underpinning on roof. Really just had to pay for nails & screws.

My hens scatter most of their food on the ground and then don't eat it!

I use an old coffee grinder to make the egg shells powder after drying them out. No problems with them pecking eggs.

Small compact coop vs. tall coop?

Build as large as you can and cover your run. Security is always first. I started out with 4 chicks in a doghouse in my garage that I "free ranged in a 8x8x8 moveable pen. I built a coop out of wooden pallets with a raised floor. I was able to get enough 12 ft pallets from a medical supply house...

    Run Floor

I built my coop on dirt but it is clay with lots of rocks and I was afraid of my chicks getting bumble foot from digging the rocks. I put old shingles down to cover any rocks and then put about 4 inches of sand on top of that. In the winter I put pine straw on top the sand to warm it up. The...

    Which is which?

How can you tell a cuckoo marans, a dominick and a barred rock apart ? Do you just have to wait til she lays an egg to see the color?

    My poor husband.. lol

Cassie , I love the sampler. Will have to make one for my kitchen. MeatKing, at least he knows better than to ask YOU to cook something else for him. If he does it like say 3xin a row, you could wait and ask him since he was going to cook anyway, would he mind cooking some for you too.LOL.

    Missing airsack (hatch virgin)

Sorry the missing airsac does seem to be a rotten egg and the star cracks don't seem to bode well. They probably have already let germs in. I would try for local eggs if you really want to hatch them. I have good luck buying day old chicks. Maybe you could ry that until you can afford an incubator.

Is it normal for a rooster to peck a new hen? (introducing silkie to existing flock of 10)

My silkie rooster isn't aggressive at all. He'll come running over and give me a look if I pick up a hen or chick and they squawk but once he sees they're ok he settles down. He sits in my lap and loves petting even w/o treats. He great at watching over the hens and really takes care of the babies.

Eggs missing from under a broody hen

My run has hardware all the way up(8ft) over the roof(9x15),and has a 2 ft apron. Mine are staying here until I can be sure the coop is secure. I know I had a mouse and a squirrel getting in mine thru the eaves...they were pushin and eating thru a soffit made of siding.

Eggs missing from under a broody hen

This happened to me recently .Check ur coop for security. After the eggs were gone . a racoon pushed my hardware cloth in from the eaves and got my best layer. He will have to destroy the hardware cloth to get in now. I'm stilll hoping my broody got away.

i need to build an enclosed run, probably by myself..... all advice needed :-)

If u already have 2x4's on the top of ur fence posts the easiest thing is to run 2x4 between them on top .Then attach hardware cloth between each 2x4. If u want to provide shade and protection from rain/snow,I used those corrugated panels called polycarbonate with 2x6boards placed on edge the...

    Sound Proof Coop

Way too small .This is a picture of me holding a sitting rooster in my lap at 20 wks old...and he was this size for several weeks before. He really didn't start to crow til about 16 wks, so maybe you won't have a problem.

what to put on chicken coop floor

I use linoleum in my coop along with poop boards. My run is sand with a lite layer of pinestraw to make it interesting to find the BOSS. I use grass in my nest boxes and yes they do eat it. I find this a good thing when they are nesting because I don't have to worry about them not eating

    Temporary coop question....

96sq ft/33 chicks vs 144sq ft/37 chicks. Pretty close comparison. I'd go for it. Good luck!

Building first coop and have run into some problems...

Try getting some pallets. I've gotten some 12 ft ones free at our local medical supply house. Great free wood I also got free windows and doors by checking apartment /trailer complexes and Craig's list. My coop is 10x10 and only bought nails and screws.

Heritage Breed Feed Consumption for 1 day through laying?

Thank you. I was starting to feel like an idiot. My bags were actually 7.5 lbs and when I started giving them layer pellets at 17wks, one WAS laying and I had no idea when the others would start. I had a leghorn which will never be full bodied and 2 buff laced Polish also with very slight...

My hens scatter most of their food on the ground and then don't eat it!

I put my feeder (which is a 5gal bucket ,holes in the bottom edges and attached to lg plant saucer) on top of a pallet with boards close together. It keeps their food clean and they eat any billed out portions from the pallet. I throw their sunflowr seeds out in the sand and straw to give them...
