Yeah actually in my experience, separating them can help. When I got my first hens, I kept them in pens side by side for a few weeks, and gradually, they were peacefully bonded. Then, when I introduced more females, I had to do the same thing because he would target this one particular Swedish...
That’s a great problem to have haha. Maybe you need to breed that drake to try and get offspring that’s gentle. I’d love for there to be a breed that has had those nasty drake instincts bred out.
Yeah it’s stressful! Age does help! With my chickens, I’ve enjoyed having a 9 yr old rooster who’s too old to mate. He doesn’t give the girls a hard time because he’s so dang old. But he still holds is protective role. Only issue is he’s infertile
Thanks for your response. I think that’s a good idea to just have a lot of hens. I’m likely going to get more because I’ve realized how much more practical they are than chickens in the winter and what great layers they are. Seriously, besides the drake issues, ducks are very underrated
I have raised small groups of ducks for a few years and am always disturbed by how drakes mate. I have one drake with four hens that is on the smaller side and not as aggressive as other drakes I’ve had. Sometimes I wonder though, when he chases them, and they sometimes don’t want to mate, if...
Interesting, yeah, if I do breed, I’m not breeding for standards or anything, so it doesn’t matter. Just interesting to guess.
I think black sex link is very likely because one of the brooders at the feed store that was empty said “black sex link” on it. It’s possible they had a few left and...
Yes, her feet are slightly yellow but almost in between grey and yellow. I thought Jersey giant but she’s 6 months old and the same size as my other dual purpose breed pullets. Laid her first egg today, and it’s a very pale brown shell. Here’s a picture- I couldn’t get a great angle because she...
The farm store sold this bird as a barred Plymouth rock as a chick- she didn’t have the white dot on her head like most do. She was mostly black. She has no barring on any feathers, and actually has a tinge of auburn feathers around her eyes. Any ideas?
These are how my green queens from 2025 turned out- does anybody else have some that look like this? They look like they were crossed with cream leg bars and multiple brown egg layers
‼️Warning: graphic description and photo.‼️Trying to figure out what got one of my Swedish ducks. I found the carcass in a corner of the barn directly below a hole in the roof, surrounded by one pile of feathers. The attack was likely in the afternoon, and there has been a pair of red tail hawks...
I love this history! I had no idea that sort of naturalization happened in America. I’m not sure what kinda chicken predators there are in the South, but in my part of the Midwest, we have raccoons and hawks everywhere + all the other critters that like chicken, so free ranging is risky here. Do...
Gosh it sounds like mornings can be hectic. You know, there’s a part of me that feels like I need to keep everything under control so no birds get hurt but then in nature, this is just how these birds function on a social level.
I’m wondering if roosters pester hens less when there is no confinement. I read that in the wild, red jungle fowl males split off from the flock to form all male groups kinda like deer do, and the alpha runs with the hens. So theoretically does anyone know if this would work on a homestead...
I have a pair of ducks that I got a couple years ago as ducklings (someone bought them and couldn’t take care of them so I took them). The hen is a mallard and the drake is a pekin, and since spring is here, he’s once again become very eager to mate and aggressive towards me. My biggest concern...
Thank you for all your advice! She will likely get more attention from me when I move with her. I’m leaving my chickens with my parents, but she will have a fenced in backyard at my new house where I can keep an eye on her and give her more individual care. At that point, I probably will have to...
I have a year and a half old single pet turkey hen who is blind and is terrified of my chickens. I have her in a separate pen right next to the chickens because she gets pecked a lot and won’t eat much, but I’d like to get another turkey hen for her to live with. I’m not sure if I should get one...
