Please help - entire batch of chicks dying suddenly - TWICE

I'm a biochemist and backyard chicken keeper. This is definitely a poison. Scented candles especially the wood wicks are toxic. Is the food dry? You kept heat in the pool brooder? If it were me I would clean all equipment w clorox, chicks no where near! Rinse and leave a couole hours. Go get...

Weird first egg at exactly 18 weeks

It happens even with older gals. You've got a good girl getting ready to make beautiful eggs. Provide an area of clean bedding in your roost. They will use it if needed at night. Ie: RIRs lay every 28h or so so it may be in the night sometimes.

chicks dying left and right please help!

I was thinking that too. Do you use feather dusters. My chicks huddled under that more than my light! Lol

    Can chicks die of fright?

I put mine in a clear tote, screen over top, fresh water no additives, chick starter and a heat pad below, 1907 house, heat lamp to one side. Nothing more nothing less till all the feathers come in. I've lost one chick in 5 years and she was weak when she arrived. Sometimes the chicks aren't...

chicks dying left and right please help!

That won't outright kill chicks though. I use well water all the time. Hoover seems to have declined the last few years. I wanted to expand my breeds the last few years and bought 4 females, got 3 Roos, yr b4 deformed feet on 6 of 12 and 3 died w/in a year. I have geese, ducks and chickens for...

    Anyone Keep Multiple Roosters Successfully?

I tried keeping 2 roos. One is no longer with us. It was a disaster. I have 19 hens in about 2000+ sq ft. 8x12 building. The cruelty of bird on bird makes soup humane. Separate coops are a possibility but would you put an 18yr old in a cage at the playboy mansion? Just my rambling thoughts...

Help! My buff geese are suddenly sick!

So sorry, I hope they're OK. My vet said they can be poisoned easily with burdock or nightshade so check your yard. Again I hope they're OK.

My goose died and I don't know what went wrong

I had a girl that ate and looked fine at 2:30 and I found her dead at 4:30. The necropsy revealed heart failure which, she said, is common especially in hybrid domestic geese. They're not sure why. She said it may be that lack of flight may play into it. So very sorry. It really hurts the...

    My Bella died suddenly

So sorry! I did a necropsy and we found nothing. According to my vet Geese will have no heart symptoms until they are found dead. She believes she had heart failure. They are very hardy birds but the rapid breeding of popular breeds is leading to more of these problems. Just sad to lose such a...

Advice for overwhelmed soon to be chicken owner!

I used a large plastic tote with a screen on it. Chip clip holders to hold the top on. They then graduate to a dog kennel with the attachable waterer and feeder. Wood chips (large chips NEVER fine) Prefab kennels take another 6-8 hours to add a floor with hardware wire, I reinforced where the...

    How to stop aggressive pecking?

O wholeheartedly agree that the rooster needs to go. It is recommended to have 8 hens per rooster. I have one girl inside a large dog kennel where she sleeps and lounges in the AM when my rooster is most active. The other hens will gather around while he mates her then they all attack her when...

Winter Feed Cost and Growing Fodder

You don't think your chickens should get a break laying if nature intended that? I don't enhance lighting and still get a descent amount of eggs. I think giving your girls a break will keep them healthy and laying for many years to come but that's me.

    Is traditional framing necessary?

It's all good until the coons and rats discover a weekness. A rat can chew through substandard walls, tunnel under and reak havoc.
