    Eye differences in Buff Orpingtons

Hello chicken people - first time raising BOs. I have two ~5 month old buffs and I couldn’t love them more. Keep in mind, I just got them from a local feed store, so I know there will be differences in appearance, but I can’t help but notice that their eyes are quite different and am now going...

9 Week Old Buff Orpington - Pullet?

Hi chicken friends! First time raising BOs. This is Mabel, she’s a 9 week old buff and her comb seems a little red. I know it’s probably too early to tell, but interested to know what others think. Bought her as a sexed pullet from local farm store. Does she look like a roo? My other BO looks...

    Nonstop crying

I think you both are right. I think it’s just a little too warm. They are just now right at 3 weeks old. I reduced the heat and so far so good. It’s been very cold the last few days and I think I over compensated. They’re eating fine and have access to chick grit. They also have lots of time...

    Nonstop crying

Hi chicken people! I have two 3 week old BOs. Both appear very healthy. Growing like weeds, eating and drinking well, very active. They are in a brooder kept at 85-90 degrees with a red heat lamp (yes, I have tried adjusting the heat). One chick won’t stop crying at night. I’ve checked her over...

How to Keep Chickens Cool in Upcoming Heat Wave?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m dying over here. Chickens are inside where it is definitely cooler than outside but still pretty miserable. One hen desperately needs to lay an egg and I tried to let her in the coop but after 15 minutes, she was nearly unresponsive. I brought a box inside...

How to Keep Chickens Cool in Upcoming Heat Wave?

I’m in the same boat. I tried to keep them outside as long as possible yesterday but one of my younger hens took a turn and I frantically set them up in my kitchen. I have a portable a/c unit. It’s not super cool on my house but it’s not 108. Fans blowing and lots of water and cold treats. Woke...

How to Keep Chickens Cool in Upcoming Heat Wave?

Wow! Thanks everyone for all of the support and ideas! I have fruits and veggies in the freezer and gave them some just now. They have a canopy next to my house that provides shade all day. I don't have electrolytes, though. Can someone recommend a brand? I can go to the store today and pick it...

How to Keep Chickens Cool in Upcoming Heat Wave?

Hello fellow chicken friends - I live in Portland and we are expecting a horrible heat wave this weekend. Temps are going to be over 100 for multiple days, which is not typical for this area. I am worried about my chickens who have definitely never experienced that much prolonged heat. They have...

    Please Help - Aggressive Hen

Your question about losing a flock member got me thinking. I don't recall exactly when she started exhibiting this aggressive behavior, but we did lose a hen, Ethel, over the summer (I bought them as day old chicks together). Ethel was ill for a very long time and we finally had to put her down...

    Please Help - Aggressive Hen

They get access to my whole yard during the day when I'm home. We live on about 1/4 acre. So, it's a decent yard. Should be big enough for 4 chickens.. We have 2 roosts inside their coop (each roost is about 24 in). This time, she hasn't been separated from them, but she's still acting frantic...

    Please Help - Aggressive Hen

For some reason, I did not get notified that there were replies to this post! I wish I had seen these messages! Update: Harriet (the aggressor) seemed to do a lot better over the next few weeks. We moved and it seemed like the two older hens (Harriet and Louise) did extremely poorly adjusting...

    Please Help - Aggressive Hen

Hello Chicken People - I am posting this with the hope that someone can help me with my flock. I have 4 EEs. Two are 2.5 years old and two are approx. 6 months old. One of the older hens, Harriet, had an impacted crop earlier this week so I brought her in for about 3 days while she recovered...

Integrating new chicks to a flock of 2 hens - Need Advice!

Thank you for the advice! I was thinking it would be a pretty smooth introduction since I only have 2 hens. Here are two pictures of her tail. Hope that's what you meant!

Integrating new chicks to a flock of 2 hens - Need Advice!

Hello fellow chicken owners! I've posted one other thread on here with very helpful feedback. I am a new(ish) chicken owner and looking for some advice. I have two 2-year-old EEs. My third chicken sadly passed away earlier this summer, so I purchased 2 new EE chicks from a local farm store...

Need Advice - Adding just 1 chicken to a flock?

In reading about Orpingtons, they sound like a good option for me, but I am worried about how big they are compared to my EEs. My chickens are quite small (4-5 lbs). Will that create problems? I’m also drawn to the Bramhas. Again, I’d worry they might be too big..

Need Advice - Adding just 1 chicken to a flock?

Thank you! I think, at this point, I'll just need to see what is available in my area. I think my neighbor might be selling pullets so if I get enough courage, I may knock on her door to see if she does (she's a new neighbor and we haven't spoken yet). At the very least, she may know of a good...

Need Advice - Adding just 1 chicken to a flock?

This is a good idea and if I end up adding just one, I will definitely try this. Since my Sussex was ill so often, she was frequently quarantined in the house so I could monitor her. One of the EEs would sometimes pick on her when I put her back out in the yard and so I would put her in the coop...

Need Advice - Adding just 1 chicken to a flock?

Thank you for this advice. I appreciate it so much. I was thinking the same thing. Adding one to a "flock" of two seems like it would be doable with some patience. Three was a perfect number for me, so I may try adding just one. I just need to find a hen (or two) now.
