Update: whatever it is, came back during the day and killed the last three. Broke their necks but did not eat anything. Husband says it looks like it crawled up through the siding and dug a hole though the floor?
Yes I think we will buy metal hardware cloth today and fix it all up. It’s so sad.
We do have weasels, mink, and martens. I’ve never seen any, but I do live in a rural area with hundreds of acres of woods around my house. So it’s very possible.
I lost one chicken and one guinea last night sometime. Heads ripped off. Husband went to check and refill water container this morning and found them. Only the heads were gone. There was a 3” hole made in the hardware cloth by predator. The 3 gal heated water bucket has been either completely...
Yea I’m not sure just a tarp would be suitable for my climate or predators. We get snow, then rain. So it turns to ice and would probably collapse.
what do you do for perches in the round shape?
thank you 💔 I really am heart broken.
Thank you. That’s some good advice. Right now mine is a “camp” that is up on legs, but I am afraid the raccoons will dig holes in the floor and get back in. I think I will go with a concrete pad for the next coop.
All excellent tips. Thank you.
Usually ours had gone in by themselves every Iggy. But they were only young.
The stick tip is also very excellent! Thank you for these!
These are great suggestions. Thank you!
Do either of you let you Guineas free range? Or do you keep them in the fenced in run?
I don’t have a very large property, but lots of open fields beside me for them. But I am so angry about predators that I now worry to let them out.
I currently have a pen for my guinea fowl inside of an old 15x15 shed in my yard. Last night a racoon opened the window, got into the shed, then bent the top wire on the pen and killed 3/4 of my Guineas.
I’m looking for a new coop idea that will help with letting the new Guineas free range, but...
Thanks everyone for all the welcomes!
I’m thinking about getting some more, but I’m so afraid 😱 I LOVE them and consider them pets and part of my family. 💔
Okay that sounds doable. I will try that.
While I have you, can you tell me how to sex them? What I’ve read is that you can tell by their call. A male has a one-syllable call and a female has a two-syllable call. Are there any other signs?
I am unsure if the lone bird is male or female. We weren’t able to sex them yet.
I want to get more, but I’m so afraid to lose them again.
Any tips on how to integrate them?
The lone bird isn’t even fully grown yet. They were purchased on June 7th 2020. And the main reason I got them was to control the tick infestation in my yard. I am unsure if chickens will help with that problem?
I am a lover of all animals. I can’t help but get attached 😓 it’s a weakness.
I could get some more flock mates. But I’m wondering how they will take to each other? I’ve read a lot about them killing the older lone bird.
Hello 👋
I am in Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦
I had 4 guinea fowl (purchase as hat kings on June 7,2020) - but now only have 1 as 3 were killed last night 😭😭
Also have one cat, one baby, and one husband - all of which heavily depend on me to take care of them. 🤣
I didn’t grow up on a farm, and have no...
Last night 3/4 of my guinea fowl were killed. No bodies left. My husband went to check on them this morning and only found feathers and blood. The only remaining guinea fowl that was alive flew out of the pen as soon as the door was opened and cannot be found now.
The pen is made of chicken wire...
