Yay, Hoping for a girl. She is what my daughter calls a 'barnyard mutt'!! The rooster would have been either a leghorn (this is my guess for 'Daddy'), a barred rock, and a white silkie. The hen could have been a number of different ones - silkie, americauna, leghorn, polish, d'uccle, possibly...
Good Morning Everyone! Would anyone like to tell me if my little Star is a boy or girl? Star was an assisted hatch on day 24. (S)he started off with curled toes we treated with VetWrap/cardstock sandals, and a week or so later, I posted pictures of scratches on her legs and toes which we...
We brought the baby in and had her walk around on the kitchen floor. My daughter noticed that it seems to step on its own feet. I'm guessing the marks are scratches from the toenails. Should I trim or file its toenails? Any other suggestions until little one grows into its big feet?
Please tell me what the marks are on this chick's feet. There is nothing on the bottoms of his/her feet. It seems to be limping a bit, favouring the left foot. What do I do to treat? I put a bit of neosporin on not knowing what else to do!
Thank you in advance.
An update...baby absorbed most of yolk sac in a couple of hours. I put her in a paper towel lined small container in the incubator to keep her from walking around too much as she has curled toes. We are going to put booties / casts on her to correct this. I can't believe she made it so late...
I have just had a very large, late hatching (day 24) chick that I did bit of assistance for hatching. Lot of issues with maintaining correct humidity in the incubator I used. After making the pip area large enough to expose the beak, I moved the membrane away from the beak and then applied...
Your weather would be very similar to mine (Zone 5). I wish my hens would all lay eggs at the same time. They seem to like to spread out over the whole day, even when they were first laying last fall!
Thank you, everyone for all of this helpful information. I guess I must be doing a few things right! I know I spoil them ... they are pets more than production birds, LOL!
I make my girls a hot cereal in the morning... 3 scoops of feed, a scoop of oatmeal, add water to make it somewhat liquid-y and microwave for 30 seconds. Stirred well so there are no hot spots and they come running down the ladder and gobble it all up. I also keep their dry feeder stocked and...
My four young hens stopped laying about a month or so ago, and then, when the temperatures have dropped to -25C, I found an egg in the nest box! And four more in the sandbox (two were frozen / cracked). That was a few days ago and I've been getting 2 eggs a day since. The days are starting to...
Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up spraying the shoulder seam with 'Resolve' (A laundry stain remover spray) and rubbed it in well, then put OxiClean powder in with the wash. Ran a normal wash, gave a 'sniff' test when the cycle finished and then dried it. All is well! My coat is now...
