Question of the Day - Monday, August 25th, 2025

Did your tastes change, or did you ever like it? I've never liked fish, but about every ten years or so I'll try it again to see if my taste buds have altered. So far, nope - it's always vile.

Yes! I will never forgive Steven Spielberg for his role in villifying them. Jerk.

Question of the Day - Thursday, August 28th, 2025

I like arborio rice for risotto and jasmine rice for fried, which are the only two rice dishes I like. I'm not a rice fan. Wait! Horchata is great, and rice pudding is okay. I haven't made either of those in ages though - I've forgotten what rice I used to make them.

Question of the Day - Tuesday, August 26th, 2025

Both. There are several who are firmly in the pet category, but their offspring are fair game.

Question of the Day - Monday, August 25th, 2025

Fish is not food, so there's no point to fishing. I haven't hunted since I started raising waterfowl for meat.

Separate the ducks and chickens into their own areas and their own coops.

Dog attack: injured oil gland on gander

Speaking of your mink oil idea, I just had a thought; I raise my birds for meat and have some slaughter days coming up at the end of next month. I wonder if it would be possible to harvest oil from the carcasses? I'll need to think on this.

Dog attack: injured oil gland on gander

My husband is much better at optimism than I am, and keeps telling me to give it time and maybe it'll get better. In the meantime, my brain is screeching at me that Tex may experience a buildup of oil under his skin that can't release itself and die of complications from that. I'm distracting...

    Diapers

I never in a million years thought I'd be asking this, but does anyone here know a source for diapers for a grown gander? It looks like my favorite boy may have lost his oil gland (and ability to stay dry), and I'd just as soon be able to bring him in with me on rainy winter days so that the...

    Goose friend

Egyptian geese aren't geese; they are a type of shelduck. If you're looking for a companion for a goose, you really need to find another goose.

Dog attack: injured oil gland on gander

I picked up Hans to look for his oil gland, just to compare. This is his . . . . . . and this is Tex's. Not looking good. I found a picture online and pasted it on top of an earlier picture of Tex's injury for easy comparison. Looks like I'll definitely have to figure out how to...

What do you do with the remains?

If you ever need to process a bird or birds again, you can always schedule processing day for the day before trash pickup day to save you a step and freezer space.

    My first bird

Glad you got through it okay! I hate doing it, but you're right - in the end, it's a job needing doing.

What do you do with the remains?

Chickens love to eat chicken. I also feed them their own eggs when I have too many. You can't judge them by human morals.

What do you do with the remains?

I feed the scraps to the chickens; they know to hang around while I'm processing and will even drink up the blood if I collect it in a dish for them. Sometimes I'll boil rice in the blood and feed that to my animals as a treat. The organs I don't like to eat and the feet are turned into dog...

    Missing large flock

It's for the same reason you're not allowed to pick up trash on your property and dump it onto mine. I wind up having to shoot a lot of animals people "humanely moved" rather than shooting themselves. What's weird is I'm not allowed to charge those people for my time and bullets.
