    The Monet Chicken House

My wife and I began building our new coop in April. We figured if we put in some hours on the weekends, we would have it completed in two or three weeks. We finished it July 11th. We didn't account for the fact that we aren't as young and energetic as we were when we built our first coop some 12...

    Electric wire instead of apron?

I'm building a new coop and run and was thinking about critter security. We have coyote, raccoons and the occasional wandering dog to worry about. I was going to add an apron around the run to prevent digging under it (coop is elevated) but had a thought come to mind. Has anyone here tried...

    Brain farts in coop building

Woke up at 4:30 this morning with my mind racing over my current coop build. Somehow, in my sleep, I realized that when I ordered the custom cut steel roofing for my 6x8 coop I had ordered it for 5x8 coop. I'm supposed to pick it up today. Please, someone assure me that I'm not the only one...

First crack at a chicken tractor

I began my venture into raising meat chickens a couple of weeks ago with the purchase of 10 Cornish X chicks. Once the weather gets warmer they will be moved outside into a tractor. So I began building said tractor yesterday. No blue prints, just a picture in my head and a couple hundred dollars...

    Who is laying which egg?

I have 9 ducks that started laying last month. Well, seven of them are laying, the other two are drakes. 5 Rouen hens, one Pekin and one crested. I am getting 4-5 eggs most every day, with roughly one day each week only getting one egg. The eggs I get are confusing me due to the colors I am...

    Holy crap, eggs!

The wife and I were out in the yard this morning picking up branches from the recent wind storm. I Looked down and found an egg in the grass where the ducks had spent the night. Just a few feet away was another one just like it. I knew they would lay eventually but had figured that it would be...

    Pekin feathers are not white

I have two Pekins that are about 16 weeks old and healthy. Their feathers have a distinctively yellow tint to them. I was thinking that maybe it is the iron content of our well water, but neither my two crested ducks nor my white chickens have this issue. Is this something I need to worry about?

    What feeders for meaties

Planning ahead for our first go at raising meaties next spring. We will be raising 100 Cornish x that will be free ranging most of the day. The plan is to feed in the morning then open the gates, then feeding in the evening after they return. What are the best feeders for these birds?

    Wutizit?

Got this with a few Iowa Blues. Not sure what it is, but I was hoping maybe an Easter egger. It doesn't look like it, so I ask for the experts input.

Quacks & squeaks - Rouen duck sounds

I have a small flock of 10 fifteen week old ducks, 6 of which are Rouens. I read that you can sex them by the vocalizations, quacking for females, squeaky for males. By now the Rouens are pretty well defined by feather color and I can see that I have one male and five females. They seem to...

    Free range ducks Nesting?

I have a small flock of 10 ducks that have been free ranging since they were about 6 weeks old. As they get closer to a laying age I am becoming concerned about them having a place to lay their eggs. I can build a nest box but I'm not sure if they will use it. They do not have a coop, they live...

    Nesting box installation question

I am currently free ranging my flock of 45 pullets and 8 Cockrell, they are 9 weeks old today. They return to the coop every evening like clockwork. I have not built the nest boxes yet because I don't want them to use them while roosting . I plan on building a nest box to mount on the outside...

The Ultimate Contradiction - Jersey Giant bantam

Ok, maybe not a bantam, but one of my white giant pullets is about half the size of the rest of my 7 week old mixed flock.

    Lost my first one

Got home from work and found white feathers strewn across the yard. This is the first time ever that I have lost a bird to a predator. I assume it was a hawk. I've seen a hawk flying around, but it was always under attack by some wild birds that nest in the area. I'll be ready for it...

First time opening the pop door

We decided that it was time to introduce the chicks, at 6 weeks old, to the outdoors. Not many came out, but the ones that did seemed to enjoy it. There were roughly 15 chicks out at any one time, but we are not gonna force them.

    Covering the run

A buddy of mine has offered me a baseball batting cage net he has from his coaching days. I'm sure the dimensions aren't exact to precisely cover my 45'x40' run, but would like to use it to at least offer SOME protection from aerial predator attacks. Has anyone used this type of netting? I...

    Two Ducklings, One String

I went out to move the ducklings outside to their day pen and found that two of them had found a String in the bedding and started eating it from opposite ends. I tried to pull the string out, but couldn't. I cut it off them and put them out with the rest. One 8 week old Rouen and one 7 week...

Ugh, getting started is hard work...

My chicks arrived two weeks ago. 46 (I think) fuzzy butts which were two or three days earlier than planned. We scrambled to get the brooder built, then the making of the water bottles and hangers and placement of heat lamps. Treated one case of pasty butt, other than that they are all healthy...
