    Weird growth on beak?

Just a quick update on uni-chicken. Just saw that she's not got much left of her horn now so I'm not sure if it got pecked off by another pullet. They've all just started laying within few days of each other and have been quite the rowdy bunch, squawking and running after each other. Stay...

    Weird growth on beak?

I will definitely leave it be and stick with the monitor+measure approach. I did find a few other threads about this same issue on here but things seemed to go unanswered and dropped off. Will make a nice research project!

    Weird growth on beak?

My flock (all Sapphire Gems, Sapphire Splash, and Lavender Orpington pullets) is going on 17 weeks; she's the only one like that. We're in central Arkansas so not really anything that could be considered high altitude or a relatively sunny climate Half of their run is shaded and they have full...

    Weird growth on beak?

I'm sure there's a thread in here about weird beak growths, but it's been awhile since I've been on here and had chicken issues---but I know where to go when I need answers! 😁 It appears my pullet is growing a horn out of her beak?! It looks like maybe there was a small bit of damage and it left...

    Eye poke or illness?

Yes, most likely not so I've found the post about using a feed bag to take him in. 😄

    Eye poke or illness?

That's so very similar to how Pickle's eye looks before I try to flush it and look at it. I'll call the vet for that first thing. Luckily my husband grew up on a farm with a ton of chickens so he gets to do the injection. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Eye poke or illness?

I sure will! I had no issue catching him this evening to look at his eye again, but he seemed to have it opened more than yesterday. I'll get the electrolytes out early for him tomorrow and ring the vet.

    Eye poke or illness?

This picture was early on in the morning when they all fly down from our big oak tree and all just hang out on the deck railing until I go out to see them, the spoiled brats. 😁 I figured something might be up if he's not perched with the other two.

    Eye poke or illness?

Howdy! Not sure if my guy has been poked/pecked in the eye by the other 2 fellas or if he's got an illness setting in. He keeps his eye closed and when we caught him, it was a bit gooey with yellow, stringy-ish gunk but was cleaned up easily with a warm cloth. He still roams with the guys and...

    Mystery chicken with issues

It was in their coop earlier; I was looking out the window trying to figure out why 1 of my 4 hens looked so funny!!!🤦🏼‍♀️😬 But when it came out, my 3 peacock guards chased it off a bit.😂 My husband closed the door to the peacock coop (all of our birds free range 100% now but we keep doors open...

    Mystery chicken with issues

Howdy! We noticed an extra chicken and have NO IDEA where it could've came from. We've got no neighbors close so no one to really return it to! It is missing a ton of feathers and is scratching around the head so I'm guessing mites/lice. I've cooped it away from my flock but I'm sure I'll need...

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Feed Costs Low?

My 5 girls will be a year old in August. They are out of the coop when the sun is coming up and don't go back in until they put themselves up so I can lock them up. They've been free-rangers since day 1 and though I provide pellets, they hardly eat it anymore; takes forever to get through an $18...

    Start more chicks or wait?

Thank you all and I appreciate you all so much! I didn't think we'd all be so affected by this loss of her, but it has brought up some very good points that I may have learned the hard way even later on down the road. It's awesome to have a forum to go to for support and knowledge/idea sharing...

    Start more chicks or wait?

There was no body, only a pile of feathers. Pretty sure it was a hawk or we'd have seen a trail. Yes, I never factored in any for "losses". ☹️ Going forward, that's a must.

    Ha! Very good analogy!

    Start more chicks or wait?

Yes, eggs would be awesome. I think I was just hesitant before diving right in; I wanted to make sure that this was all something we could handle. I can see that the staggering makes sense---mental note made on that!

    Start more chicks or wait?

Ah, yes, absolutely! I could see that happening if there were in there more. (Who would've thought hens would do the peck and fight business?!) I think we're good on that front as where we live now they're able to spend all their time outside ranging; they only go into the pen at night to roost...
