Single Hen Won't Sleep in Coop: Will She Freeze?

Not at all - I very much appreciate the suggestion... Didn't know a partitioned roost was even a thing!

Single Hen Won't Sleep in Coop: Will She Freeze?

We do have one Polish hen - one of the bigs who's always been at the bottom of the original pecking order - who for awhile was placing herself at the top of the ramp like a guard at roosting time, soon after the littles joined the flock. She would chase the other 2 out of the coop but they...

Single Hen Won't Sleep in Coop: Will She Freeze?

I've not done anything at all yet, partly because I haven't been sure if I should worry about it. Her lonely spot is quite well protected. But also because she's up there so high it will be a challenge to get her down. Guess I need to plan to get out there before she roosts... 😁

Single Hen Won't Sleep in Coop: Will She Freeze?

4 month old EE... 1 of 3 littles. The other 2 happily head to the coop and "their" end of the roost (away from the bigs) every night. But Hester has chosen the highest rafter in the run and settles there every night. No predator concerns, but temps in WI have already been pretty low (20's)...

Ended Post Your Best (Worst) Chicken Molt Pictures - 2023

Omg this thread - particularly this pic - is making me feel so much better! Our GLW hen just recently lost her entire tail EXACTLY like this and it's been worrying me SO MUCH b/c I keep reading that molting starts at the head/neck and proceeds toward the tail ... So of course I've been convinced...

Sick? Trying to Crow? Or Just Being a Chicken?!?

Oops, forgot that part. No, no rooster. Just the 7 hens and now 3 month old chicks that are in their own separate but visible area of the run.

Sick? Trying to Crow? Or Just Being a Chicken?!?

Our two 16mo old Ameracaunas have always made strange sounds - more like "honks" vs "clucks". But for the last month or so one of them has started making frequent and VERY obnoxious noises that are making us: 1) concerned she may have something serious going on; and 2) more than a little bit...

Comment by 'anniegal' in article 'Things I wish I knew before I got my first chick'

Wow what an excellent article!! Why can't I figure out how to rate it? If I could it would be a solid five stars from me (I think that's the highest?)!! I'm just over a year into chicken keeping and have to agree with everything said here. Plus the info on leg banding was incredibly helpful -...

Ended The Ultimate Egg Dish Challenge

Exactly! :hit I make a seriously wicked lemon curd - and it uses TEN egg yolks... But the eggs I guess wouldn't qualify as "visible"?

Chicken “molting” or being plucked by other chickens?

Could you explain more about this comment? I'm here searching "early molt" because I have two almost 1-year-old blue Ameraucanas who recently started losing their neck - or, more specifically, their muff - feathers. As in completely bald in that area. We already have "peepers" on an...

    Bloody head! (Reintegration Saga)

Aww... I'm sorry to hear about your ladies! The sad thing is our Polish are actually the whole reason we HAVE chickens. I just fell in love with a friend's Gold Buff - and now we have these 2 (of 7... so far). They're so quirky and generally sweet - and ENTERTAINING!! So, yes, here's hoping this...

    Bloody head! (Reintegration Saga)

Thank you! I do think it's because she was in the house for several weeks before we finally got a partitioned area built in the run as an "infirmary" (which we'll use for new chicks in the fall as well). But we kept her in the infirmary - in sight of the whole flock but no contact possible -...

    Bloody head! (Reintegration Saga)

We were finally able to reintegrate our poor Polish hen into the main coop a week or two ago - after her last frostbitten toe auto-amputated. Then today I realized THIS is happening: She is definitely being bullied (and pecked obviously) but we didn't realize just how badly ... It *seemed*...

    Reintegrating after Frostbite?

Hello, You all helped me verify recently that one of my Polish hens is in fact recovering from frostbite on her toes on one foot - and it was a huge relief just to KNOW that's what's going on! Now I'm wondering how to fully reintroduce her to the flock! She's in a partitioned off area of the...

What are you adding to your flock this year?

Having said that we're adding a measley 3 to our flock of 7... But I'm very excited! 1 gold laced Wyandotte 2 easter eggers

    Frostbite, yes?

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH for confirming my thoughts! I'm new to chicken keeping (first winter) so was completely flummoxed when this started up!! It is SUCH a relief to finally feel like I know what's going on!! :love Now on to preventive measures... I must say I AM still confused how she's so...
