I have one who is doing this... just started this week. Mine are Black Australorps. Between the 6 hens they are laying 4-6 eggs per day in winter. I am blown away!

Is that considered a good ratio of ducks to drakes? I’m newish to ducks. Thinking of getting 3 muscovy ducks and 1 runner drake and raising the babies for meat.
Lol, good point! I don’t think babies count... and then I could sell them until I needed to replace one of the adults... but maybe not worth it. I suppose I could focus on a threatened breed and do all the same type and raise babies...

Welcome! I’m new here as well. Have had chickens for over 20 years and still researching new breeds. What are you looking for in a breed? Do they need to be quiet? Do you want them to lay a lot of eggs or be mainly for meat? Or both? Or are you just looking for cute, friendly birds?
Oh! I was going to get a drake for ducklings... so maybe I should get 5 duck hens and a drake. Would that be enough? If not, I can try to get 6 duck hens and a drake =). I was thinking an Indian runner drake because they are on the smaller side, right? Or is there a breed of drake that tends...
