We had to say goodbye to our sweet Cleo today. She was suffering for many days, with no signs of improvement. Thank you to all here for your help and support.
From what I can tell I *think* her crop is emptying normally, but I'm very inexperienced and it is really hard for me to tell. I've been adding a little bit of electrolytes to her water, which she is drinking slowly but well.
She made it through the night, and appears to be the same this...
Thanks so much for your reply.
Just felt inside her vent. I didn't feel anything like an egg, though it's my first time checking a hen and it was hard to tell.
Her crop doesn't feel notably bloated or mushy. It just feels spiney/boney, moreso than when I feel the crops of my other hens.
Thanks very much for your reply. We've only had these birds for two weeks. The other three seem very healthy.
She is still eating and drinking small amounts, but barely staying awake. She is standing up, just wobbly when taking steps.
That makes sense, her comb has not gotten very red at all...
Latest update on Cleo: She's inside staying warm. We gave her a warm bath in case she's eggbound, and tried to feel if there is an egg, but we just cannot tell. She's eating and drinking, still mostly just standing there puffed up with her eyes closed.
She made it through the night but still isn't doing well. She is barely moving. We brought her inside where it is warmer. She drank water and ate a little bit this morning, but she is moving extremely slowly, still puffed up and was sitting in the run with her eyes closed.
When inspecting her...
Thanks so much @ChicNmom and @deidreg . I just went to put the girls to bed and she seemed even more weak. Most alarming is she has very little control over her feet and kept losing balance. I tried to help her onto the roost but she kept wobbling and falling off.
In the morning, I will check...
I have not noticed her squatting when I approach her, she doesn't really react at all. She is usually right in the middle of the pecking order, not the leader but not the one who typically lags behind.
I have a new flock of four ~17 week old hens. A few days ago, I started noticing that one of the black stars was looking and acting differently. She is very "poofy", much bigger than the other girls, with her head sunk down. She isn't as alert or skiddish as usual, and lets me come up to her...
Hi everyone! I am new to Middle TN (Goodlettsville/Nashville area) and am looking for about 4 pullets or young laying hens! Please let me know if anyone has some to rehome!
