YAHIT (Yet Another Hen Integration Thread) - But different question :)

Thanks everyone for the insights in the replies. For those of you who talked about adding different ages at the same time - how do you deal with the difference in feed? The instructions we got from the hatchery originally told us to stay on grower feed basically until they start laying. So, if...

YAHIT (Yet Another Hen Integration Thread) - But different question :)

Hi BYC, There are some great pre-existing threads regarding hen integration that I am just trying to absorb like crazy. Definitely like the sound of the 'introduce them at night, accepted in the morning' and thinking we might try that but also going to do some exposure in a "can see but can't...

    Rooster woes

Thanks, never seen the peepers before. I do think that with some consistency it seems to be plymouth rock and brown leghorn hens that are doing the pecking. We just got some of the colored leg bands on Amazon, so perhaps next time I see it happening I will start with that as a sort of warning...

    Rooster woes

Hi all, Our flock currently has about 23 hens and 3 roosters. We ordered pullets but never got rid of the 3 roosters. There are two RIR and one Colombia rock. We believe this is a fairly decent rooster to hen ratio (I think 7:1 is generally cited). Anyhow, our roosters have had ongoing problems...

    Dry hatch attempt

Hey everyone. So the chicks started hatching yesterday. As of this moment we hatched 23/41 or 56%, our prior best was 16/41. The biggest difference was that all the eggs made it past the candling check on lockdown day. The prior attempt for example we removed 10 eggs as "apparently non fertile"...

    Dry hatch attempt

Yup! from lockdown day on we are still cranking up the humidity though as normal :)

    Dry hatch attempt

We are on our 3rd round of hatching, for 1 and 2 we had about a 50% hatch rate. Read some posts about dry hatches and decided to give it a try. We just entered lock down and upon candling every. single. egg seems to have some activity. Normally we would expect to remove atleast 10/41 with...

    Question on failed egg

The mystery has been solved, but you put forth so much effort here I wanted to answer some of your questions since it may be an opportunity to have some insights. Brinsea Incubator with a 40ish capacity, auto egg turner, etc. We monitored the temp and humidity both with the brinsea unit and...

    Question on failed egg

You are 100% correct!!! Now that you say it I easily see it. So the egg never did crack. Almost an optical illusion lol. And yeah, saw a few of these getting dragged around the incubator.

    Question on failed egg

Thanks for the quick reply! The incubator smells a little musty inside but not any more than I expected after all the chicks hatched. The rotten egg theory seems very probable as I think I read that when heated a rotten egg can "explode" on touch? And I know a couple of the later hatching chicks...

    Question on failed egg

Hi all, just completed our first ever round of egg incubating and we ended up with 7 chicks. Did our best to follow all the advice on the internet, much of it from posts here (so thank you!) and we feel like we did not too bad. We have learned a lot about more carefully selecting eggs etc., and...
