    Golden Laced Wyandotte Rooster

We picked up our chicks today and the rooster we had ordered didn’t have enough hatch out, so we chose a golden laced wyandotte rooster instead. I’d love to see chicks you’ve hatched out from mixed flocks with this rooster breed. We have a big variety of breeds here 🙂 I’m looking forward to...

Feeding the flock with a rooster

We are picking up chicks in the next few days and we will be getting our first rooster chick with this group. We use Kalmbach feeds. As far as raising a rooster, can we still feed this group of chicks the 18% chick starter or should we use the 20% flock maker?

Red bottom & soft shell egg

I only saw the one without a shell and that one was intact. I don’t think anything has broken inside of her. She’s in the nesting box now which is a nice change of pace for her. She hasn't been laying in the boxes recently. I’m monitoring her from the coop camera every few minutes. If it’s a no...

Red bottom & soft shell egg

This is a different hen now 🤦🏻‍♀️ The vent issue cleared up with my other. I doctored her up for a while and she looks much better. My girls have a huge shed coop. My in laws joke that they have a mansion because it’s so spacious. They have a 8x16 run with a swing, a perch, dust bath area, logs...

Red bottom & soft shell egg

One of my hens just laid an egg in the run. It was soft shelled and her with 3 others ate it after it dropped. I found half a shell in the coop about 2 weeks ago. The egg was eaten and just half a shell left. I’m assuming it was hers. I checked her after she laid the egg in the run and her...

    Vent Picture-Bruised looking vent??

I’m going to the feed store in the morning. I will absolutely look for one of those items! She started laying mid January of this year. Her and one other hen lay the biggest eggs of all my girls. I’ve been watching them extra in case of prolapse. They’ve been getting out a lot more now that the...

    Vent Picture-Bruised looking vent??

She is at the bottom of the pecking order, so that makes sense 😕 I’ll put some vetericyn on her and see if that helps her.

    Vent Picture-Bruised looking vent??

I just noticed this on my light brahma. The top of her vent area looks bruised and kind of swollen. She did lay an egg a few hours ago, but I’ve never noticed this on my girls before. Thoughts on what could be wrong?

Reintroducing chick to others after injury

She took 3 weeks to heal enough for me to try and reintroduce her and have supervised time with the other chicks. I had to really watch them because they still went for her neck. Thankfully no more blood though. It closer to 4 weeks to have her back in with the others full time. Definitely keep...

Reintroducing chick to others after injury

Yes! I’ll share some photos. I’ll take a picture of her neck today. I can’t believe it healed the way it did. I used vetericyn and frankincense oil on her.

Reintroducing chick to others after injury

When I set her down, they all rushed towards her and within a matter of seconds she was cornered and they did try to pecking. But,then again, she isn’t completely healed. You can still see some of the scab. I’m probably a little overprotective of her right now though. I know they’ll peck, I just...

Reintroducing chick to others after injury

I had to separate my leghorn chick after she had severe pecking injuries at 3 weeks old. She has been in a container beside the other chicks with a window so they can see each other still. Now they are 5 weeks and she is almost completely healed. So I tried to put her in with the others and do...

    Tail feather development

It’s either a welsummer or speckled Sussex. I can’t tell the two apart, but I know for sure I have both in this group of chicks lol I’m not sure which ones are the fast feathering ones

    Tail feather development

This was the chick on Wednesday. It doesn’t look much different since then.

    Tail feather development

My chicks are 1.5 weeks old. 4 out of 5 of have tail feathers growing in really well and a lot of wing development. My other one has some wing development but no tail feathers yet. Everything online says that means a rooster. Trying not to jump the gun and say that’s what it is. Is it just...

    Olive Egger Chick

I’m Both are gorgeous!!!! Are your girls laying Olive eggs? Some people have said theirs have laid a cream/beige egg. The hatchery said they used black copper maran, ameracauna, and welsummers for the olive eggers. I think my chick is more on the maran/ameracaua side.
