Still have two of my original chickens, they’re older but still laying! I don’t post here much, but still lurk, and learn from what everyone else is talking about!
I had this happen this summer too. I went through the same thought process as you…Is it mites? Illness? And then I spent some time just hanging out and watching them. Turns out one of the other chickens was plucking her feathers, caught her in the act.
We have our chickens in a repurposed horse stall in our barn. I open the door for them in the morning to an outside small horse corral. We used PVC pipe to create hoops and placed welded wire fencing over the top and all around the sides. It’s worked very well so far.
Chickens did not like it today but made it through. Glad today was the worst for temps! Lots of panting but watering down their area and giving ice water seemed to help.
I’m going out with ice for the water pans that I put out pretty regularly but not sure what else I can do. They have a lot of shade. I put a couple cubes on the ground and saw one of my chickens cleverly stand on one for a bit. I too am afraid for tomorrow the predicted temperature just keeps...
I’ll go see if I can see her somewhere. I was finally prompted to get them moving because she seemed to be trying to find a different place to be, and was actually over at the neighbor for a minute. I figured it was their golden opportunity. It snowed last night with very high wind, and she was...
Update...I got the neighbor to come over and get the chicks. It was fairly hard to catch them! And as I suspected she wasn’t aware that one was missing. I hope they will do well.
She did let me know part of the issue is that they didn’t have a coop for them for a long time but now do, so they...
I’ll have to let them know this weekend. I do have just a few hens of my own, and honestly I am not all that interested in keeping these chicks, just wanted to know if I could do anything if they are indeed under my bush for the long haul! My guess is she came to my yard because of the wild...
Thanks for your reply! I should have added that my neighbors are not particularly vigilant in caring for the animals that they have. I’ve woken up in the morning to find their goats under my deck. They have just let whatever chickens they have roam freely without a real coop or anything. I’ve...
So, one of my neighbor's chickens decided that my place is a better one for having a nest. I didn't realize this until they were hatched...and I heard peeping. Her nest is fairly weather protected it looks like, and she's been bringing the chicks out to show them how to eat out of the dish I...
Hi there,
I am a relatively new chicken keeper in Washington. I have four hens; two of whom I inherited when a neighbor moved and she insisted I have them; and two that I got as pullets last year. I have one barred rock; one Silver Laced Wyandotte and Barred Rock cross; one Rhode Island Red...
