Hi Had my emus (girl 5, boy 2) for a week and a half now. They are finally both eating (not palettes yet tho). I have spent a lot of time in the paddock. Had no issues. Would sometimes raise up slightly if i went to stroke them but would always calm down when i rub their neck. Today the girl...

New emu owner. Not eating their pellets?

Made some progress today. Managed to get the girl to eat dandelion leaves and about 20 grapes!!! The boy did try some leaves but dont think any actually made it down his throat. Shows no interest in the grapes. Wierd how the girl only seems to like red grapes. I will try and find some more...

At what age are Emu chicks fox-proof?

I am from UK also. I just picked up my first emus. My misses hates my emus and rhea :lau. I have a rhea that is bigger than your emus and I still think a fox would get her if it was motivated enough. She lives outside in an acre paddock with my shetland sheep. If a fox does go in the sheep go...

New emu owner. Not eating their pellets?

Hi Thanks for that logical response it is very reassuring. I read online the males can go 50+ days without eating while they are with the eggs. I assume based on that 5 days without food isnt going to hurt them. I will keep you all updated. Thanks again!

New emu owner. Not eating their pellets?

Thanks again for the reply it is really appreciated. I am hoping they can live with the sheep eventually. I guess they have never seen sheep before and a new home thrown into the mix is a lot for them to cope with. I have just put down bowls of scrambled egg, carrots, brokoli, dog food, dog...

    Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

Hi Thanks a lot for the reply. They seem a bit better today. I think the animals on the paddock next to them they are not used to. We have Shetland sheep (smallest breed). They seem to be reacting less when the sheep come near them. We have moved the 3 boys out of the same paddock as the emus...

    Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

Hi Everyone. Glad to join this community. Collected my first emus a few days ago. Female 5 years and male 2 years. They seem to be drinking but not eating. I managed to get them to eat grapes yesterday but as these contain very little nutritional value I have tried other things. Dog food (dried...

New emu owner. Not eating their pellets?

Thanks for the advice will try that. They love grapes. Tried cabbage but they didnt seem to care for that tho. The small sheep I have put them with are a bit unsure of each other but hopefully they will get a long. My rhea lives with the female sheep and they get on great. Sleep very close...

New emu owner. Not eating their pellets?

Hi I collected my first emus yesterday. Female 5 years and male 2 years. I have had a pet rhea for over a year which is very healthy and happy living in her paddock. My emus live in the paddock next to her. The behaviour I am seeing from the emus such as pacing back and forth, looking on edge...

Rhea owner! Can I keep it outside overnight?

Thanks for the reply. No nothing. It seemed totally fine a few hours before. Good to know the fox shouldn't be an issue. I am thinking of getting a female as the chickens may not be enough company for him.
