    Rooster injuring hen

They just turned one yesterday. The injuries started about 6 weeks ago when they were in the coop/run. I was hoping free ranging would help, but he has immediately gone back to her. I am going to separate him and see if that helps, but I am afraid rehoming him may be the only option.

    Rooster injuring hen

I have a rooster who keeps injuring one of my hens. He overmates her and has caused significant injuries. She was recently in quarantine for 3 weeks due to needing stitches. Now that she has been reintroduced and the hens have accepted her, I found a large wound to her neck from him biting...

    Scaly Leg Mites?

Thank you so much! Fortunately, I picked up Vetericyn a few weeks ago. I’m so glad I did because I had it on hand for a nasty injury to one of my girls. I’m glad it will work for him, too. I appreciate appreciate the advice!

    Scaly Leg Mites?

This is Allen — or at least Allen’s feet. He has always had rougher feet than the hens, but I wanted to make sure he doesn’t need to be treated. All the ladies have perfectly healthy scales, so I’m not sure if it is leg mites or not. I’m an overly worried chicken mom most of the time, and I...

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Honestly, I was willing to pay whatever it took to save her. I still have no idea what she got caught on. The vet said she had never heard of a rooster mating and causing so much damage. She thought a hawk tried to grab her, but there is no way one could have gotten into the run/coop.

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

The funny part is that she cost $45 and was a last minute add on to my chick order. Too expensive to be a mutt, so I am going to agree on the designer chicken label! She is now a $100 chicken after her trip to vet to get stitched up.

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Olive is currently separated from the flock due to an injury. The vet never mentioned her antibiotics could cause such unusual side effects…

    Missing Feathers

The saddle appears to have made things worse!! I currently have my girl in our spare bathroom enclosed in the glass shower. Please please help and tell me what to do!! I have treated the wound and provided her with food and water. This is my first big Injury. I found her hiding in the nesting...

    Missing Feathers

Olive was not the least bit phased by the saddle. Hopefully she will be more comfortable and on her way to healing her beautiful feathers. I love this sweet girl ❤️

    Missing Feathers

Thank you so much for the advice! I just ordered a saddle. I have more than the recommended run and coop space, but I haven’t been allowing them to free range during winter due to a few close calls with the local hawks. Hopefully the saddle will be helpful until spring when I can let them out...

    Missing Feathers

That was my assumption as well. Thank you for confirming!

    Missing Feathers

I truly appreciate the response! She is definitely one of his favorites! The flock will be one year old on March 22nd, so they haven’t experienced a molt yet. These are my first chickens, and I still am constantly learning how to care for them. The weather should warm up next week.. hopefully...

    Missing Feathers

My flock consists of 9 hens and 1 rooster. I noticed my Favaucana is continuing to lose feathers on her back. I have never observed other chickens pulling at her feathers or noticed her pulling at herself. My only assumption is that my rooster is the cause. Is this something I should be...

    Coop below 32 degrees

Oh no, poor Nugget! I’m just across the river in Carmi, so it’s safe to say we have the exact same weather. I’m getting ready to go check on the flock now.. I love the idea of warm veggies. I hadn’t thought of that before!

    Coop below 32 degrees

That is pretty much the plan I have decided to follow as well. Our low tonight is 6 degrees and we are currently getting snow, so I kept them in the coop today. They looked cozy and happy before I left for work this morning, so I plan to monitor them this evening and go from there. This will...

Thanks for the reply! My concern is the upcoming weather!

    Coop below 32 degrees

I will have to take photos of the coop tomorrow. My in-laws gifted me a heated water container for Christmas, so the flock (and I) have enjoyed that. No two birds are the same breed.. I wanted to have an assortment. They hatched March 22nd, so about 9 months. Gold Laced Wyndonette Blue...

    Coop below 32 degrees

My coop is already below 32 degrees and temps are going to drop much lower. There is no concern about drafts, and I have proper ventilation. My question is if I should turn on a heat lamp until I can get a safer heat option? This is my first winter with chickens, and I want to make sure they...
