    Tumor on chicken

Mo, our 5 year old Cochin, has a tumor on her head next to her comb. (See photos) She’s eating, drinking, forging, and once in a blue moon, lays an egg. The other chickens leave it alone. It’s not obstructing her vision. She’s still a chunky girl even fatter than her sister. Last year we had a...

    Mill Food Recycler for chickens

We saw this product that you can put in your kitchen. It turns leftover food into food for chickens. But I wanted to know the opinion of the group here. I would use it with their layering feed and not as a primary food source. The website claims... "Mill is the easiest, cleanest way to turn...

    New roo, older hens

Instead, we swapped the roo for 4 new baby hens. 😂 Bittersweet win.

    New roo, older hens

Sad news, we ended up rehoming the rooster. He was hyper-fixating on two of our hens, aggressively pulling out feathers, and beating up their combs (to the point there were scabs left). He is going to live out his dreams of his procreation at the feed store. Great feed store, they don't put...

    New roo, older hens

It's funny how our older hens have bonded in chasing away the rooster. But our Plymouth hen is still top of the pecking order and scares the begeezus of the rooster. Will she eventually submit or is she too stubborn to be beneath him (she's been our top hen for years)?

    New roo, older hens

Also like to note out salmon faverolle was severely picked on by our Plymouth Rock to the point the salmons head was bleeding. Now the Plymouth Rock goes up against the rooster to defend the salmon. Our Plymouth is very dominant. The rooster is petrified of her.

    New roo, older hens

Let me give you the dynamics… currently we have 8 hens. 1 that’s 7 years old, 1 at 5 years of age, 3 that are 3 years old, 3 that are 4 months old. When we got the 4 chickens this last March, we were surprised to know that our speckled Sussex was a rooster (He’s absolutely gorgeous though)...

Hen or Rooster- speckled sussex edition..

We have a 16 week speckled Sussex (Demetrius) that seems to have developed a larger redder comb and waddle faster than the 3 other chickens we received at the same time, born the same day. (Brahma, black sexlink, and Delaware) And seems to have longer tail feathers then usual female Sussex. She...

    Medicine for chicken

I am absolutely petrified to shove my finger in my chickens mouth to give her the two pills the vet prescribed her. (She had a non cancerous tumor on her foot and needed it removed). She’ll be on the medicine for the next two weeks. I’ve tried wrapping in in cheese, grapes, watermelon...

    Is this a good idea?

pests were a problem and we thought they were coming from rats. but now I know it's been the squirrels. which have never been a problem before. the ones invading us are the baby squirrels

    Is this a good idea?

We are too rural for barn cats as well as we don't have a barn and are next to a busy street. These are literally backyard chickens. lol (on an acre of property)

    Is this a good idea?

We have a coop inside a coop situation, and if need be, I lock them up in. The chickens eat from the grandpa feeder and all spare food stays in a locked storage cabinet in a garbage can. House situation, can't really do a cat or a dog in the yard. We also have coyotes that sometimes roam in...

    Is this a good idea?

I have a dilemma... over the last month, ground squirrels have been getting into the coop, eating the feed, and eating/stealing the eggs. I fortified the coop, sprayed pepper powder/paste in and around the coop, and mixed it into their food. I collect the eggs often. Because we let the chickens...

how to reintroduce 2 bully hens to flock

I tried once last week and we had some drama. One in the flock who used to walk the yard with Hen B, did the puffy chest "come at me bruh" type behavior and did try to attack/peck. At night, I typically put them inside the coop (has heat lamps) because it gets into the 30s and they think it is...

how to reintroduce 2 bully hens to flock

We separated 2 of the 9 hens about fall last year. One (Hen A) was mercilessly picking on one of our other hens to the point I couldn't keep feathers on her head and a new wound kept appearing. And we felt bad for always separating just her until she healed enough (no blood). The other hen (Hen...

    Pinless Peepers

We ended up separating the bullies in their own area. Rocked with the pecking order! Now the faverolle is growing her feathers back!

    Pinless Peepers

I have 2 bully hens. 1 who is just trying to exert dominance, the other, we believe she thinks she is a rooster (she's mounting some of our other hens and is definitely top of the pecking order). If I catch chicken 1, I'll put her in timeout. We wanted to use pinless peepers but were curious...
