I didnt notice any scabs other than a little frostbite on the ends of the rooster's comb from our cold snaps weeks ago. I'll check them tomorrow and focus on the combs to see if I can find the injury. Thank you!
I found this scene this morning in my coop. Most of the blood was on the roost, only drops in the bedding. All 11 hens and 1 rooster accounted for, acting normal:moving and eating fine. We checked their toenails, feet, bellies, and vents one-by-one (much to their displeasure), and couldn't see...
I live in north NY, about 30 mins from the border to Canada. The ventilation wasn't good until I opened up the big triangle (thanks to the suggestion of another person on here a while back). Thank you for the insight!
Ok, I went back out for updated pics!! 😄
Please ignore my ugly solar battery wires and insulated battery box at the lower left of this pic. Planning to make it prettier in the spring.
I do have a couple branches at the bottom from when they were younger and hadn't been interested in roosting...
There are 14 birds in the 5x6 coop, then they have a covered and wrapped run the spend the day in that is 5'x24'. No water or food in the coop, their water is a heated nipple bucket in the run.
I dont have any recent pics. This is a build pic, the only difference is they have 2x4 roosts now in...
All 3 of my roosters have frostbite on their combs and waddles. I noticed a little frostbite 2 weeks ago on 2 of them, made more ventilation in the coop which I think was the problem (no more condensation on coop windows since opening it up).
However, we had a cold snap last night (-12 with up...
Here is another view of the blue. I am sure he is a boy. They are all pretty young so their comb and waddles are not grown out as much as they will be. There is a dark colored hen right behind him in this pic that hatched with him, you can see the difference between the comb and waddle size and...
...a lot for both answers. I started building in July and finished enough so that they could move in around September. My lack of experience made me a lot slower, I spent a lot of time staring at the project trying to figure out how to do what I wanted.
In terms of cost, I purposely did not...
I forgot to mention I do have a predator apron, or as I like to call it, the "neighbor's children tripper" as I think all of the local children have tripped and faceplanted on parts of it until I got it to lay down properly. 😆
I will have to fix the window screens-thank you for the suggestion...
I have two 8" gable vents on both sides of the coop (four total), do you think I need more ventilation? I have some pics with them but don't have any good pics of the door side with the 2 vents:
Wanted to share my summer project with everyone here. We are a military family, and on our 7th place to live finally got someplace that allowed chickens and we own our own property! Moved here in May, husband left for training in July for a few months. I decided to "save money" buying a big coop...
I have 5 english orpington roosters that are 13 weeks old right now and most of them are stunners already! Very friendly, gentle, and quiet. 3 blacks, 1 blue, 1 splash. I might be willing to let one or two of our girls go with (also 13 weeks) if you take all! Price/trade negotiable.
We are...
Hello everyone! Long time lurker, finally joined. We are moving to Jefferson County in upstate NY in May, are finally buying a house with one pretty acre of land, planning to immediately start the dream of owning our own flock of backyard chickens and a beautiful garden and starting a few fruit...
