I just got my first ever egg yesterday, and another today! It's kind of like being a kid again and finding easter eggs. :)

Were my buff orpingtons too small?

Thanks for all the input! Definitely learned something from this thred, which is why I love this forum. I was worried I had done something wrong, so glad to know this is the norm. It's amazing how much calmer the flock is without those roos harassing everyone. I have a barred rock that matured...

Were my buff orpingtons too small?

Sorry for the late response. Yes, free choice. It makes sense that dual purpose bred would be smaller vs. a breeder who is selecting for heavier birds for meat. Even more so for breeds designed specifically for meat production. Thanks!

Were my buff orpingtons too small?

I've heard that hatchery birds are smaller. Why is this? And why do they say that they get up to 9 or 10 pounds if they don't lol. I know he still had some growing to do.

Were my buff orpingtons too small?

I dispatched 3 buff orpington roosters yesterday at 16 and a half weeks old. I was going to try to wait longer, but they were getting hard on the hens. After processing, they weighed between 2.8 and 3 pounds. Is this normal at this age? They appeared healthy. My chickens have a coop/enclosed run...

Need help choosing a blue egg layer

I would like to add a blue egg layer to my flock. I live in Georgia and plan to free range, so looking for a breed that is heat tolerant and a good forager. I currently have 8 pullets and would like to add 3 to 4 more. I plan to keep a rooster and maybe try my hand at breeding next year. My...

    Buff Orpington Gender

They are a few days shy of 8 weeks. One of them isn't as red as the others and is more shy, but still more developed than the ones in my flock that I know are females.

    Buff Orpington Gender

I have 4 of these from a straight run "brown egg layer assortment" from Meyer Hatchery. Thinking all my buffs are males. At least 3 of them have cockeral behaviors.

    How to post updates

I posted some pictures of my straight run chicks a couple weeks ago. Wondering if I should post updated pictures on my previous posts or if I should make new posts to get opinions on gender.

    Partridge Penedescencas - gender?

These two are 7 and a half weeks from a straight run of brown egg layer assortment from Meyer's Hatchery. Neither is showing obvious cockerel behavior, but one is a bit larger and slightly larger comb than the other. I have noticed that one of them gets picked on a bit from the dominant ones in...

Are these chicks buff orpingtons? Gender?

Update on the buff orpingtons. Some have cockerel behavior but I think there is at least one that doesn't. It's hard for me to tell them apart.

    Coop temperature in Georgia

My chicks are 6 weeks old and we just moved them to the coop. We have an Over EZ chicken coop. It has two windows on one side and 2 small circular vents near the roof. I'm in Georgia and we are already seeing 80 degree days. Will my chicks get too hot? Should I cut more vents or look into a fan...
