    3 different babies

I’ve just had 3 chicks hatch yesterday. All three are very different in colour, though they all have clean legs and single comb. My laying hens that could have provided the eggs: - Light Sussex - Speckled Sussex - Black australorp - Black layer (which are australorp x rhode island Red...

mumma hen ripped chicks wing off

I've got a broody hen who had her first chick hatch over night. This morning I found it out away from mum, it had been scalped. I brought it inside to put under a heat plate but then discovered it had it's other wing completely ripped off and the bone was exposed (about half a cm). Because of...

    How old is she?

I picked up this lovely lady the other day, I don’t know how old she is other than being told she’s still a way off laying yet. She was by herself, the last one not sold, and I don’t yet have any golden laced or Wyandotte in my flock, so chicken math says she doesn’t count lol (that’s my...

    Sussex or cross

This dude is 18 weeks old. When we got him as a week old chick he was completely yellow and the lady said he was likely Sussex but may be cross. She had numerous breeds. My question is, does he look like he’s entirely light Sussex, or is he more likely Sussex cross?

What colour eggs will she lay?

We have an almost 18 week old pullet who’s mum is an Araucana (British Araucana so she has a full tail) and dad is Belgian bearded d’uccle. She is the cutest little thing, she’s small, has the boots and lower hanging wings like her dad, and has muffs and pea comb like her mum. Her mum lays...

    Silkie roo?

My hubby found this little dude on the side of the road (presuming dumped, which immediately made me assume he was going to be a roo even before I saw him). Hubby just said he found a chicken, no idea what breed or hen/rooster and brought it home. As soon as I saw him I knew it was a silkie...

    Pullet or Cockerel?

These 4 are all about 19.5 weeks old. The 2 light Sussex I'm confident are pullet, but correct me if I'm wrong. The 2 British Araucana (not American Araucana, they have different breed features) - the grey and the white. Every time I think I've worked it out I change my mind. Currently I'm...

8 weeks old and night temps

My chicks are 8 weeks old. They’ve been outside everyday but been bringing them back inside at night (window open but heat plate on particularly cold nights). temps have been as low as 32F (0°c) but mainly getting down around 42F (6°c). At what stage can I leave them o those at night to save...

Araucana chicks. 6 weeks old. What sex are they?

They are both about 6 weeks old. They’re British Araucana. I keep changing my mind about whether each is roo or pullet. Thinking the grey is roo based on the way the tail is growing? They grew their feathers and tails in at different rates. Would like for both to be pullets but likely both Roos...

2 light Sussex. 6 weeks old. What sex are they?

they are about 6 weeks old. I’m confident that Penny is a cockerel (tell me if you agree), and hoping/thinking that Glowey may be female? But could be wrong and both could be boys. I’ve marked the pics with P for Penny and G for Glowey

Hen had difficulty passing her egg this morning. Looked egg bound. Worried for tomorrow

Australian Langshen, as best we know she's about 2 years old. She's not over/under weight. She usually takes about 1-2 minutes to push out an egg (have observed this on numerous occasions). Today she was pushing and pushing for what must've been 10 mins, I could see the egg at the opening. She...

What colour do you think this will be?

Marble is approx 3.5-4 weeks old Araucana (British araucana, different to American guidelines for the breed) (and if s/he is in fact just Easter egger I’m not sad about it). I’m just wondering what colour this is? I was thinking at first it was blue, or maybe lavender, but as the feathers are...

Light Sussex. 3 weeks old, difference in comb development

Light Sussex (at least that’s what I was told when I bought them at the markets). I know it’s really too early to tell male/female at 3 weeks and I just need to wait another 3+ weeks, but is it normal to have this much difference in comb development at around 3 weeks old? Is this potentially...

    New

I’ve been a chicken mum for 18 months now. We’ve currently got 6 hens and a rooster, and 4 chicks around 3 weeks old. I live in Australia so things can be a bit different here, but this forum seems to come up most often when I’m googling anything chick/chicken, so here I am!
