Hi so I have got 2 new sussex hens that have completed quarantine then been on the other side of the fence visible to my current australorps for a week. This weekend I integrated them all together and after the initial squabbling they kept in there own groups however I noticed today that for no...
Hi I am new to chickens and haven't encountered any health issues yet. However I noticed this mark on one of their faces this morning. To me it looks like a little scab perhaps from being pecked by one of the others but I thought I'd post a photo here just in case it's something else? So any...
Thanks for the reply. Those measurements are helpful, so my run area is roughly 430 square feet with several undercover protected places. So that's covered, but in regards to the coop it has a floor space of 4 square feet and currently 3 nesting boxes and 4 feet of roost (with space for another...
No it is a 1.2m cube with 3 nesting boxes multiple levels and enough room for 2 roosts but currently only has one. Also they are only in there at night and to lay.
So where I live it's currently 0°c - 12°c (32f-53f) and my girls are outside from dawn to dusk. As for rain Melbourne is known for having 4 seasons in one day so it's hard to say but they have the coop and also a sheltered area when it's wet. Spring it usually wetter than winter but alot warmer
Hi thanks for the reply. I will try to update my location. But in the mean time I am in nunawading Victoria. I have read a lot about integrating new hens to a flock however none of what I have read said anything about time of year is best other than that most breeders hatch new chick's in spring.
Thanks for the reply. I too feel impulsive to get them now I'm just new to chickens and wasn't sure about any possible issues introducing them during the cold weather or anything like that.
Hi I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am looking to expand my flock of 3 to either 5 or 6 and had a few questions. Fist of all heres a bit of info on my current situation. I have 3 one year old blue australorps in my backyard in a 40m2 "run" (it's just a fenced off open...
Hi thanks for all your advice i ended up putting the cage in the coop and left her in it for 2 days. I let her out yesterday morning and has been active since. I have seen her sitting down on the ground out side a few times but hasn't been going to the nesting boxes. Roughly how long should it...
Australop, she tried to break out at first and bashed around but then calmed down and when I went and had a look before she was sitting on the plastic mesh thing quietly.
Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately I leave for work when it is dark and have an automatic door to let them out when it is light so I wouldn't feel save leaving her in their open run. However I could put her in a smaller cage that I made from some wire shopping baskets and place that in the...
Hi i am new to chickens and one ofmy hens has gone broody. I can't be home during the day to keep her out of the coop so I have built this small area in the shed to isolate her untill she snaps out of it and was wondering if it should be fine? Cheers tom.
Hi everyone so I think I may have been mistaken I think I may have just been a mixture of egg song and a bit of carry on to get another girl out of the nesting box. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that myself after some research but she was also making noise early yesterday morning with no egg and then again today with no egg but seemed to settle down about 2pm. So I am realy unsure.
Thanks you the reply. Once I figure out exactly which one it is (I'm pretty sure) will she eventually stop as its her 1st week here still. Or will I need to take action?
The other one is currently in the nesting box and it is either the one closest to the camera or the one nesting that's making the noise it's hard to tell unless they are side to side they look so similar. Where the one towards the back is lighter.
That may be true but ive had 3 eggs every day for the last 4 days. So either 1 of the other 2 is constantly laying 2 a day or its the hen making all the noise.
I will try to get a a video of her doing it as I'd doesn't sound like a roosters crow but more a poor attempt at one. However she will not do it while I am outside.
