Two new Easter Eggers, what cross breeds?

Finally follow to this thread, the roo went to live with another flock of 20 hens and a rooster and he’s doing great. The hen laid her first egg, the blue-green one, no chicken farts, first one had a yolk.

Two new Easter Eggers, what cross breeds?

No question now who’s what gender. Just thought I’d post an update on their coloring. The brown one is chasing the mosquitoes and other bugs.

    Prison?

The pullets tend to stay close to the run, darting back in at the slightest sound. The hens, however, have a favorite dust bathing spot under the pines they use for these warm days.

    Escape chickens

The pullets will get scared and jump through a gap in the fence and then be perplexed on how they got there. I love watching the chickens explore and learn.

    Free range unattended?

This is our second season of raising chickens from chicks. I’m surprised at how much the little ones are showing the same behavior as the older ones did when they were little. They know how to duck and hide and mostly explore areas where this is heavy cover from aerial predators. I used to...

    Escape chickens

I’ve seen my chickens squeeze under fence that I thought was impossible. I was trying to get them to jump back over the fence with mealworms when they said “it’s easier to just pop under.” Lol

    Prison?

I started off free ranging, same as you. But after too many jumping of the fence and finding them crossing the road, I decided to keep them locked up, except for a few times a day where I let them free range with supervision. They’ve actually grown used to “we go out and forage” for a bit, “we...

Two new Easter Eggers, what cross breeds?

After a few weeks of visits and living in the same area (with safe space for them to escape), looks like they’ve been accepted into the flock.

@RoostersAreAwesome, is there anything we can do to train him to be a good roo? Our flock will only be 4 hens.

Two new Easter Eggers, what cross breeds?

The black and white’s saddle feathers also reach all the way back to the vent area. I’ve read about round vs pointed saddle feathers for sexing, but I’m not sure which “hers” is. We named her Puffin, because as a chick she reminded us of one. She’s also gets pecked by the hens, not sure if...

    Introducing them to the flock

Thanks for the comment. I’m building a second coop this weekend. It will be a similar size to the one we have. Not pictured is the outer run that 12x12 which is for daytime when I’m in meetings and then .5 acre of free range space when I can keep an eye that they don’t fence jump. The coop...

    Introducing them to the flock

Simple under the coop enclosure, but it’s working great. It allows them outdoor time and a safe place to start being introduced to the rest of the flock. I figure once they’re integrated I’ll lift the door out of place for run space or maybe make it a safe place for injury recovery.

How long does it take after adding light for hen to lay?

I agree. Our ISA Browns laid non stop through the winter. The Dominiques stopped laying for around two months in the cold of winter. Now that it’s warm again, we’re seeing the Dominiques lay almost every day.

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I once tried to clean the coop when one of the girls wanted to lay. She somehow worked the door open and then was surprised that all the nesting boxes were empty. She decided she could wait the 5 min and came back to lay.
