I forgot to mention that I was going to put pine shavings over the soil as bedding. Then I can scoop out the bedding and replace. But I like your idea of sand instead of soil, with the shavings on top. Thanks!!
Question on flooring materials: we are making a large brooder in one of the horse stalls of our barn. We need to bring in fill because the floor is too low. Would it be good to put soil on half, and gravel on the other half? So the waterer would be on the gravel and when they make a mess in...
Hooray! I found a dog house on craigslist! It actually looks very similar to the one you have, tweetysvoice! I found a kiddie pool too, and we already have a large dog kennel. Just need to get the brooder ready in the barn and we'll be all set!
I don't have ducks yet - getting them in a couple of weeks. I have been reading posts in this forum and most people agree that a true duck starter is best, but since it can be difficult to get it, unmedicated chick starter is okay as long as you add brewer's yeast into it to add niacin. if you...
Thanks so much for posting - you have a nice setup! I was on craigslist this morning looking for dog houses ... lots listed, crossing my fingers that at least one is still available!
Wow, thanks for the rudest response I have ever seen on this blog. Anyone else want to be more helpful by telling me how much brewer's yeast can be added to chicken starter/grower to provide enough niacin? Also, it has to be brewer's yeast, not bakers yeast?
Thanks to all of you for posting these pictures. You have given me lots of ideas for how to set up my duck housing and enclosure!
A question for those of you who keep your ducks year-round ... do you have any winter pictures with snow? I live in upstate NY and we typically get lots. Do...
Hi everyone,
I am getting my first ducks soon and I love all of your ideas for duck setups! I have a question - duck poop water (LOL) is not "hot" like chicken poop and can be used directly on plants (so I've read). Can you overdo it though? Is it something you should use once a week or less...
Hi - I am getting ducklings in a couple of weeks - they will be just about 3 weeks old when I get them. This will be our first time with ducklings - we have had chickens for a couple of years now. My local stores don't carry food just for ducks, so I will have to use chick starter/grower (16%...
Thanks for all the responses! I did a lot of searching on bumblefoot and I did not come across the post that you referenced, PrincessChicky. We have a really good local store for backyard ponds and aquariums and I bet I can get that Tricide-Neo powder there. I just wish I had realized what...
Hi,
About 1.5 weeks ago we had to do "surgery" on one of our chicken's feet because she had bumblefoot. We followed the directions on this and other sites and it seemed to go fine. Since then, we have been redressing her foot each day, first soaking in an epsom salt bath and then applying the...
Ha ha, I just read through this whole thread and I'm glad there was a solution at the end! That is SO funny - I could totally see my husband and kids pranking me like this!
Glad you solved the mystery!
Hi all, I was wondering if any of you experienced this. Last year we had 9 laying hens and had pretty good egg production, even through the winter. This year I have 19 hens (7 are almost 2 years old though so not super-productive, all the rest are less than a year old) and we also have one...
