Anyone know what influence free range vs coop has on a solitary chicken? I always feel bad that she is cooped up, however coming in December I will have a dog in my yard and probably have to confine her in a limited space.
What is an acceptable roaming area for 1-3 chickens?
Thank you for your reply's.
Yes I supplement with oyster shell grit and eggs shells. My friends were using the feed I gave them for all the birds.
I had hoped between the rooster and the guinea hens she would get the idea. I know the rooster was VERY interested in her and that she put up a...
How do you "de-stress" a chicken? I've tried being out in the yard with her but that doesn't seem to change anything although she likes the company. I've fed her fresh spinach with she loves.
I'm only used to having dogs...can you tell?
Do solitary chickens produce eggs?
Would leaving her...
Hi all! Any and all help would be appreciated.
Back story: April 2021 got 2 chickens that were approximately 1 year old. One was reddish brown, second was speckled tan/white. They may have been purchased from tractor supply. They are kept in a Omlet chicken coop with 12 x 4 ft run and let out...
Unfortunately no- I hadn’t signed up on this group yet and had already disposed of the offals- it was trash day and I have been grossing out my family with hanging the ducks in the refrigerator “aging “ the meat hoping to make the dry plucking easier. They couldn’t wait for me to get them out
Unfortunately I’ve already tossed the offals before I thought of asking questions on this site. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d get many responses but this group is fantastic and really stepped in! I’ll be processing 3 more in about 2 weeks. If anything looks suspicious, I’ll take pictures and ask...
Thank you for your help! This was definitely the dominant drake. He's in the freezer now. I will be getting a few more drakes in the next week or two. It's strange. They've been kept in a bachelor pad to give the girls a rest and fed organic feed. These three had very little fat on them. The...
I realize this is an old thread but hoping you or others could help me. I recently processed a Peking duck with testicles just like this. Wish I’d saved the pictures. Did you ever discover the cause? Was the bird still safe to eat? I read the Canadian article further along in this thread and...
Thank you all for the welcomes! Learning a lot reading all these threads. I've just processed my first 3 drakes a friend gave me. Had some difficulty identifying if these drakes are okay to eat. I don't know what "normal" internal organs look like. Any ideas where to get information? If the...
Could someone please help me? I processed three drakes I got from a friend this week. Can someone please post what "normal" organs look like?
Below are the pictures of the internal organs of a Peking duck. The liver is dark (pic #1 - top side of liver) and "stained green" on the underside...
I'm looking for information to raise backyard chickens for egg production. Eventually would like to be able to raise chickens and ducks for meat production. We have bobcats in the neighborhood that got our first 6 chickens after they had finally begun laying eggs.
Hello! I'm new to processing ducks. I'm not sure what organs these are.(large white about 3" x 2" ) In the other ducks they were creamy white, but in this pekin duck they were half gray. Are they okay? is the meat okay to eat? how do I tell if the duck was healthy? it was running around just...
