Miss Lydia, thank you so much!
I have niacin but no liquid b complex, I shall get some right away. Scrambled eggs, this might be a stupid question but duck or chicken eggs?
I posted the other day when my 7 duck eggs from a supermarket were hatching and people were so kind and helpful.
Sadly one duck passed, it was floppy and couldn't hold itself up and only lived a day. We had one that pipped at the wrong end though and had to help it out of its shell completely...
I wonder if anyone can help - one duck has come out at last but its belly is very large, skin coloured and lumpy. It doesn't look normal at all. It still has a bit of yolk to absorb but it's belly doesn't look well at all. The duckling is very still and not fidgeting.
That's good to know, thanks! I broke a hole big enough for him to bust out when he's ready so I'll leave him now and hope he makes it. Membrane still see through and gooey looking so that's good.
The 3 that haven't hatched yet have stopped peeping. Beaks still opening and closing, still wriggling and breathing ok, but no sounds now. I have chipped away at the wrong-ender but still veins so I've stopped for now. But they all seem so quiet. Could these 3 not make it potentially?
Thank you all so much for advice and comments!
3 ducks are hatched now and fluffed up! They’re soooooo cute! 4 others have been pipped about 48 hours now. Two are fine, but one is the pipped wrong end one and another who hasn’t done a thing since internal pip (I had to external pip for it)...
Haha I've read about the mess! I'm quite looking forward to getting stuck into the whole experience and the kids will help out.
We have a thermometer in the brooder and it's so far matching the lamp, so it does seem that the lamp turning itself off and on is keeping it steady.
The wrong end...
Attached pictures of them! Hope they work! I’m glad to hear moving them too soon won’t have been the worst thing. It really did seem the only option. Our incubator is entirely unsuitable once they hatch.
Another newbie question if I may! We have a heat lamp on a thermostat. It’s turning off...
2 have hatched! My word, they're huge. How ever did they fit in the eggs? We've had to move one to the brooder already which I really didn't want to do but he's giant and was trying to stand up and kept scraping his head along the silly lip of plastic that our incubator has. I really felt he was...
It's huge!! It's taking up most of the spare bedroom so I think it'll be ok. If not, it's one of those sandpits that comes with a lid the same shape, so we can split them between the two if necessary.
One of the ducks has externally pipped, but at the smaller end of the egg and seems to be...
Thank you for replies! Ok, chick grit! Thank you for that. I shall get some.
No sorry, the pool isn't full of water! I wouldn't do that. It's an empty pool that we're just using as a brooder, with hay in the bottom and heat lamps above. Plastic seemed easy to clean and with high sides!
Hi everyone! I was on here a year ago, and everyone was super helpful. I bought some supermarket duck eggs, got one to hatching but sadly he died after externally pipping as a blood vessel bled out.
This year we're at it again, and from 2 boxes of eggs from Morrisons, we now have 7 eggs pipped...
Just to update, the black stains were blood and he died in his shell. He hadn’t moved at all since pipping the air hole so I can only assume he must’ve burst a vessel in the process and bled out. Poor guy. Thanks for everyone’s advice though x
