My solution to an egg eater

Thanks! I'm hoping it's enough of a deterrent, coupled with them starting to go outside again, that whoever was eating the eggs will forget all about it.

My solution to an egg eater

Hi folks. Been a looooooong time since I've been here, but I got new chicks last May and here I am again. I had to share this because it works and I hadn't seen it done before. So anyway, because they are young they've been laying right through winter, but one or more became an egg eater a...

    Where to set trap?

Thanks Mahonri, appreciate it. I hope I get it, too. Leggy thing he was. And young looking, too. Maybe he's not very smart yet.

    Where to set trap?

Last night as I was grilling dinner I heard my hens squawk, only to look up and see a fox not 10' from their run. By the time I got back outside with a gun he was 100 yards off already. So, figuring he probably wised up some and won't come around when I'm ready for him, I'd like to set up a...

    Culling a bird?

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully the blue-kote does the trick then. It was all I could do to get a good spray on her, but it's a good spray alright. I don't handle my birds and that presents its own problems when something like this crops up. And I will keep my eye on the instigator. Thank you.

    Culling a bird?

Just to add, the meat above the tail is much better looking today, but two buff orps are still trying to peck at it. We'll see.... I threw in a can of cat food just to preoccupy them for a while. Maybe things will work out for the better, but I'm still curious if it's better to remove the main...

    Culling a bird?

Hi all. My small flock of five hens was doing well until yesterday afternoon. I noticed one of my buff orps walking behind sl wyandotte pecking at her. I was horrified to see what she had done to the other hen, right about the tail feathers. It was a bloody, lumpy looking mess. And the weird...

    hen pecked

Thank you for your reply. I tried filling a litterbox with sand and DE and they wouldn't go near it. I will try adding the DE directly to the ground they have dug out and dust bathe in. I haven't seen any parasites on them. I last checked them a couple weeks ago. I went out when it was dark...

    hen pecked

A while back my hens were pecking at each others' butts and also pulling out their own feathers, so I was directed to get some Blu-Kote and that seemed to heal them up, but their feathers never grew back. Is that normal? They will always have bare butts? Now, on to today's problem; One hen is...

    Using OLD rusty galvanized equiptment?

Thanks for the post. I was going to ask this same thing. Two galv feeders that are a year old and both troughs are rusted. That stinks. Mustn't be a very good galvanizing.

    Is this "broody"?

Update She is no longer broody Yesterday I noticed her out with the other girls and last night she was on her roost at dark. So yes, about 2-3 weeks before she snapped out of it. I'm glad. I was getting tired of tossing her out of the nestbox everyday. I started feeling sorry for her....

    Is this "broody"?

Congratulations?! If she had fertilized eggs to hatch rather than setting on an empty nest I guess I'd be happier And since egg production appears to be an egg or two off, with no eggs to be found in "her" nestbox, I can only assume she has stopped laying during this broody period. I guess...

    Is this "broody"?

So how long is this broodiness going to last? Does it vary greatly? I'm getting tired of kicking her off of her nest. And like I mentioned earlier, it's throwing the other girls off their egg laying habits. Maybe one of the other hens only uses that nestbox and it's always occupied now. At...

    Is this "broody"?

I couldn't tell you if she's swollen back there or not, I never really looked before she went broody, so have nothing to compare it to. Other than she walks around all puffed out. And her butt has been bare since winter, so that amplifies the way it looks. I updated because I wanted to mention...

    Is this "broody"?

Update. She keeps getting up there and I keep pushing her down off. Funny thing is, she isn't laying on any eggs. She nests in the same nestbox and the other four hens lay their eggs in the other nestbox, but there are never any eggs under the broody hen. Egg production is down, too. I...

    Is this "broody"?

She went plop and hit the floor. Then she started nesting where she lie. I rattled the feeder and the other hens came back inside to eat (the feed always gets hung up and doesn't gravity feed) and when she saw them eating, she got up and came over to eat, too. Thanks again for your experience.

    Is this "broody"?

Thanks for the support She's still up there this morning and I'm going to lift her off now. She's probably been up there all night

    Is this "broody"?

A screeching beach ball? She's still up there, I can't say she screetches when I touch her, though. Her tail is doing a bobbing up and down thing. I forgot to mention that before. She is facing directly away in her nestbox and bobbing up and down. She is definitely puffed out. This is just...

    Is this "broody"?

Sorry, did a search and all I came up with was hens laying on fertilized eggs.... I've got a hen who was in the nestbox last night, late...... and now is up there again and it is past dark. She doesn't want to move when I gently urger her, but I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of eggs under...

    Help! Bare, bloody butt pic

Thanks Miss Prissy. I assume that means I'll have to catch them first? Or I could throw it at them That's kinda my problem. I never really raised them to be handled, though one comes up to me to be pet. My coop is not a walk-in either. So I would have to reach in there and try and grab one...
