I'm in a small rural county that only recently approved chickens in the town limits. Lots of rules about how many, how large a lot, and fencing. No roosters allowed. Mine routinely escape the fence and free range, but the neighbors think they are cute (so far) and don't complain. I am trying to...
I used heavy plastic to line the outside of the coop to prevent any possible draft. Also using extra litter inside... but my chickens seem oblivious to the weather. We have had some nights in the 30s but days here are still sitting in the 50s or higher. This week we are supposed to hit 70 one day!
I'm no chicken expert, but everything I read says roosters don't do well together unless they have a lot of hens (like, maybe 7 each) to tend to. Mine was a Columbian Wyandotte and he would have been GORGEOUS but he was also getting aggressive. I am definitely a proponent of "being a good...
I had a beautiful Cockerel but had to get rid of him because of zoning. The neighbors are very patient with the hens but I'm not sure they would have enjoyed early morning wake up calls.
Welcome! So nice to see others here in the Commonwealth. I haven't been keeping up with this in a while because it didn't really seem to find its audience.
My girls have grown now and are laying pretty well... though not exactly where I would like. I'm not yet seeing a slow down for Winter, so...
Thanks for the reply. He did fine fore the evening as you said. He isn't happy now the the girls are up and out, but I can certainly understand. He will have to be contained until about noon when the new adoptive family can take him. He has water (though he seems to ignore it). Wish it could be...
Hope I am posting this question in the proper place!
I am rehoming my Cockerel tomorrow morning (found a great place for him!) and so I placed him in a crate tonight when he came back to roost. He has bedding and water. The crate has wire sides so he can see out. Right now I have the crate in...
First crow this morning. Not yet loud enough to wake the neighbors (and attract unwanted attention) but on the way! Still looking for a home if possible.
I am still looking but I don't think I can avoid the choice for long. I understand the need for flock management but Im having a little trouble working my head around it so that I can "do the deed"
Yes- I actually think I might have two. The one in the picture is the one I am certain of. I also have one of the Delawares that I'm prettt sure is a Cockerel. I'm trying to find homes (my zoning won't allow for roosters) but I'm not optimistic.
Thought it might be fun to connect with others from the Commonwealth! I'm from Gloucester (essentially Tidewater). A happy victim of chicken math, I have 3 Delawares, 3 Columbian Wyandottes, 4 Isa Browns, 4 Golden Polish, and 3 Golden Penciled Hamburgs. My first flock raised from chicks.... week...
