What color type is my Americauna?

Hello folks, bought this hen from a hardware store, labeled Americauna. She came out black and white with blue feet, but she's not a splash, she's not a blue, she's not wheaten, and I cannot find another one colored like her. Ignore the sapphire behind her. So naturally, I am here to ask the...

    Question about dummy eggs?

Hey folks. I just heard anecdotally that someone puts dummy eggs in their boxes to give their hens a break from laying, saying that they will not continue to lay if there are eggs left in the nests, broody or not. Does anyone know if this is true? I can't find more information so I thought I...

Younger chickens destroying nesting boxes - HELP!

Update: the nesting boxes have been bedded with pine shavings and they are still being scratched, though not as much. I really tried to remove every vestige of hay from the boxes before refilling them. The coop is very waterproof... Maybe I should place shredded newspaper instead or the paper...

Younger chickens destroying nesting boxes - HELP!

I mean, that could be, but they all get along really well. Nobody gets plucked, harmed or bullied. The sapphires are a bit smaller but not by much. They've obviously established their pecking order but none of them are bullied or kept away from food or water. They do have cliques but over the...

Younger chickens destroying nesting boxes - HELP!

OK, thank you for the idea. Yes, I can put shavings instead, for now, and I'll look up other materials for the future and see what works best. Frustrating though, because they have full unlimited daytime reign over several acres to scratch and dig to their hearts content... And there's never been...

Younger chickens destroying nesting boxes - HELP!

Ok folks, this one is really confusing me. Any and all advice on how to stop this behavior is greatly appreciated. We have 16 hens. The eldest are about 7 months. 4 of them are laying. They are free ranging daily and lay faithfully in their boxes. The youngest are 3 or 4 months. We have 5...

26 week old Rhode Island Red won't lay eggs

She started laying just 2 days after we had this discussion - I didn't have to pen her up or anything! Now she lays more eggs than her already laying roommates, the leghorns. When the other hens catch up I'll have more eggs than I know what to do with. Thank you so much, again, for your help!

26 week old Rhode Island Red won't lay eggs

So here's the deal, literally 2 days after I placed this post, and right before making the decision to pen the RIR until she lays in her nesting boxes, she started laying! And in the boxes! Now she out-lays her 2 leghorn roommates! She must have been a late bloomer after all! Thanks again for...

26 week old Rhode Island Red won't lay eggs

My husband thinks that is the very issue. Unfortunately we have 3 acres but we have looked and looked in as many places as we can think of, in fact just this morning husband hand weeded the whole front yard looking for a clutch. Thank you so much for your help, I guess we will just have to keep...

26 week old Rhode Island Red won't lay eggs

Hey folks, I'm getting a little bit concerned about the 26 week old RIR hen who hasn't laid a single egg. 2 of her roommates are leghorns who've been laying for at least a month. They started around 18 weeks. Maybe it's nothing to be concerned about but the whole flock is in great health, they...
