A friend with more building experience is helping us out, but thought it was not worth the effort to make the roof even because I can only stand up in the highest part of the slanted roof.
We turned the large fixed window into two hinged ones, added an automatic door, took out the top brooder...
This is our first house and I do not have a lot of skill. Trying to learn.
Expanding the walls is something that I definitely think is a great idea and something I’d wanna do eventually but may be out of my scope right now.
I’m at work right now, so I cannot meassure but my guess would be 3 ft lower and upper at the highest points. I’m 5’7 and I can stand up straight where the hole leading to the lower floor is.
That it was used as a brooder was my thought, too. I think I will remove the upper floor.
Edit to say...
I took the roof off that was allowing rain to enter the coop. Luckily it’s still structurally fine, but will probably add some plywood over the floor boards.
Having the roof off allows a better view and access to the coup. Before I put new roofing on I want to take care of ventilation and need...
Thank you for all you advise!
Good to know that it could be enough space for up to a dozen. I’m debating if I should wait until spring and then get six chicks or if I should get three adult laying hens from our Amish neighbors as soon as finish the repairs and then add some fancier ones in the...
I took more pictures hopefully that helps. The run is 13 ft x 7.5 ft so about 100 square feet not counting the area under the coop which I think I will fence off because something was/ is living under there. One of the drop down door is really rotted so I think I will replace that and try to...
Thank you for your advice! I’ll take more pictures and will measure the run when I back home from work tonight. I was already thinking about adding a roof myself.
The lower floor 5x8 ft, the upper floor is half that minus that opening going to the lower floor. I assume they had that ladder that’s laying in there connecting the two floors and the hatch to the garage is there to clean the upper floor? We already plan on installing hardware cloth. There...
The lower floor is 5x8 ft and the upper floor is a little less than half that. I assume I would put the ladder thats laying inside the coup in the coup to connect the two floors and they would just hung out up there if they want? And the little hatch to the garage is there to clean the upper floor?
We bought a house that came with a coup and run. We kept chicken when I was a child but this would be my first flock. Is this setup usable? I have never seen anything like it. There is an “upstairs” which I assume the ladder is supposed to connect to. And it has a hole that opens to the...
