Who knows the mind of a hen??? I figure that if they like to lay outside of the box, then whatever. IMO, you really can't control where a hen lays. They are going to do whatever they want to do, and you sure can't stay out in the coop all day waiting for them to start laying so that you can...
Good afternoon Folks. This is my BR Prissy. She is close to 4 years old and really moving slow these days. She spends a lot of time squatting in the dirt, taking it easy in her old age. She sometimes has to flap her wings to get herself going when she gets up to walk. She also seems to be...
Me...
Awesome! Thanks for the info. I suspected it would be that way, but I wanted to be sure. I knew she'd be laying sometime soon, so I figured it might be her first one. :)
Greetings all. I have a feeling this is probably discussed on another thread, but there are so many, I'm not sure if I'll find the info I need. I went out today to find an egg half the size of my regular eggs. Is this typical for a hen's first egg? Penny, my Delaware, is right at the age now...
Mucho gusto.
Me encanta enseñarles a mis estudiantes. Hace casi 14 años que enseño español, pero hace 26...
I'll check on these things and get back with you. I think she's laying fine...whenever she lays. There are four hens so I have no idea who's eggs are in the nest each day..LOL. She lies in dirt but not necessarily in the sun. She's just lying down a lot. She acts like it's work for her to...
If I'm wrong on this, someone can feel free to correct me. I personally would not get too excited about my chickens not roosting on the roosts. I've provided the equipment but they have to choose to use it. If they are happier on the ground or in a nesting box, then so be it. I don't fight...
IMHO, it's not a big issue. You need to do what is comfortable for your flock. I have never clipped mine but they are in an enclosed area, so there is no need. I would have no problem doing it if it was necessary.
Production seems to be low, here in my neck of the woods. I'm lucky to get one to two eggs a day from my four hens. It may have something to do with the weather?? I also think they are getting ready to molt.
I heartily agree with this. I was thinking the same thing. You never know what you are going to get, just like with almost any animal you have. When I had my chicks in the brooder, I'd sit with them almost every day for about 15 or 20 minutes. I got them used to not only me but also my hands...
Living in the country involves things like roosters crowing. I live in town, so I cannot have roosters, but if I was on my dream farm, I'd most certainly have one. Sorry that your neighbor can't handle the beautiful sounds of the early morning crowing. It's just part of the territory! :) I'd...
Addendum: My bigger concern is internal parasites like worms. I just don't like the thought of contracting some odd internal parasite that will show up in a month or so.....
OK, folks. I hope you don't think I'm crazy but I couldn't figure out where else on the forum to ask this question. Please don't think I'm a crazy hypochondriac. I'm usually not, but I have a question:
Can a person get any kinds of parasites from a chicken?? This afternoon I picked up Prissy...
