RIR nesting in front of the nesting boxes?

Who knows the mind of a hen??? I figure that if they like to lay outside of the box, then whatever. IMO, you really can't control where a hen lays. They are going to do whatever they want to do, and you sure can't stay out in the coop all day waiting for them to start laying so that you can...

Thanks. I'm hoping she's still tough enough to make it through...

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Love this pic!! Barred Rocks are some of the prettiest hens in my opinion.

    Prissy

Good afternoon Folks. This is my BR Prissy. She is close to 4 years old and really moving slow these days. She spends a lot of time squatting in the dirt, taking it easy in her old age. She sometimes has to flap her wings to get herself going when she gets up to walk. She also seems to be...

    Any Hispanohablantes here?

Me...

    Really Tiny Egg

LOL! Mine is a bit bigger than that, but it still doesn't fill the space in the egg carton like the regular sized eggs I get from my other girls.

    Really Tiny Egg

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I suspected it would be that way, but I wanted to be sure. I knew she'd be laying sometime soon, so I figured it might be her first one. :)

    Really Tiny Egg

Greetings all. I have a feeling this is probably discussed on another thread, but there are so many, I'm not sure if I'll find the info I need. I went out today to find an egg half the size of my regular eggs. Is this typical for a hen's first egg? Penny, my Delaware, is right at the age now...

    Any Hispanohablantes here?

Mucho gusto.

    Any Hispanohablantes here?

¡Hola! Aquí todo pasa bien. Dime, ¿de dónde eres y dónde aprendiste el español? Enseño español aquí en PA en un distrito escolar pequeño. Tengo casi 80 estudiantes en total en los niveles I - IV. Me encanta enseñarles a mis estudiantes. Hace casi 14 años que enseño español, pero hace 26...

    Can't figure this out...

I'll check on these things and get back with you. I think she's laying fine...whenever she lays. There are four hens so I have no idea who's eggs are in the nest each day..LOL. She lies in dirt but not necessarily in the sun. She's just lying down a lot. She acts like it's work for her to...

18w old chickens don’t roost? Will they ever?

If I'm wrong on this, someone can feel free to correct me. I personally would not get too excited about my chickens not roosting on the roosts. I've provided the equipment but they have to choose to use it. If they are happier on the ground or in a nesting box, then so be it. I don't fight...

So sorry for your loss. :(

Is wing clipping a chicken considered cruel?

IMHO, it's not a big issue. You need to do what is comfortable for your flock. I have never clipped mine but they are in an enclosed area, so there is no need. I would have no problem doing it if it was necessary.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Production seems to be low, here in my neck of the woods. I'm lucky to get one to two eggs a day from my four hens. It may have something to do with the weather?? I also think they are getting ready to molt.

How do you get chickens to stop being so skittish?

I heartily agree with this. I was thinking the same thing. You never know what you are going to get, just like with almost any animal you have. When I had my chicks in the brooder, I'd sit with them almost every day for about 15 or 20 minutes. I got them used to not only me but also my hands...

    Neighbor complaining about roosters crowing

Living in the country involves things like roosters crowing. I live in town, so I cannot have roosters, but if I was on my dream farm, I'd most certainly have one. Sorry that your neighbor can't handle the beautiful sounds of the early morning crowing. It's just part of the territory! :) I'd...

    Question

Addendum: My bigger concern is internal parasites like worms. I just don't like the thought of contracting some odd internal parasite that will show up in a month or so.....

Ok. But how about internal parasites like worms??

    Question

OK, folks. I hope you don't think I'm crazy but I couldn't figure out where else on the forum to ask this question. Please don't think I'm a crazy hypochondriac. I'm usually not, but I have a question: Can a person get any kinds of parasites from a chicken?? This afternoon I picked up Prissy...
