This exact thing is happening to me now. I have had the roo in a separate coop for a week. My concern is that any time the hen sees this rooster, she starts clucking loudly and hides in the coop. This also causes a few of the other hens chase her and try to peck her comb. I'm worried her fearful...
I'm trying to figure out if one or two of my Welsummers laid these eggs. They are all fairly consistent in color and pattern except the speckly one on the bottom right. It is also smaller than the others. That's my second Welsummer's 1st egg right?
Mine do a similar move and have been around and laying for several years so I think its normal behavior. Interested to see what others have to say. The sleepy clucks in this video are adorable though!
Celebrate the first eggs you are getting post-molt or from new chickens with me! This is from my new Welsummer, her first egg. Look at that incredible BLOOM! I am so proud of my hens. Show me your first eggs!
They would definately be more vunerable to predators, but honestly I wouldn't be letting my waterfowl free range right now because of Avian Influenza. Mixing with wild birds or coming into contact with their droppings could infect your birds. Maybe its not too bad where you live? Blocking public...
Eye (pun!) wouldn't risk it. OP was just defending themselves and the injuries that roosters can cause are no joke. The rooster below was VERY close to causing a serious eye injury. I agree that actively trying to fight them probably increases aggression, but protecting yourself when the rooster...
Wow I can't wait for my Welsummers and Ameraucana to start laying! The grey eggs here are especially interesting! I got this massive speckly egg from my sex-link yesterday.
He just wants to dance with somebody! I keep telling him to be patient and the girls will come around (they haven't started laying yet). His glossy saddle always makes me swoon lol.
100% The old "fool me once" adage should apply here but apparently not everyone agrees with me lol. Glad you are keeping your chickens safe and not taking out your mistakes on the local wildlife.
It is your job to protect your flock from predators. While it is extremely sad to loose pets to wildlife the answer is not removing the wild animal that is just acting naturally, it is to modify your behavior to prevent future issues. Don't trap and kill that raccoon (or worse dump it...
That shade of blue is beautiful. I voted for blue as I think its a little more unique than the green, but I would be thrilled to purchase both egg colors. I agree that half and half is ideal, and you can mess with shades by mixing some blue layer into the green genetics or vice versa down the...
I just got 2 Wellie hens and a Roo (my first roo ever). They are so sweet and funny. I love their chatter. The rooster is protective but not aggressive and SO pretty. Wonderful breed.:love Thanks for clearly explaining their great qualities!
