    Molting/Broody at the same time

Is there any update on your broody and molting hen? I believe I have the same thing happening now with a buff Orpington. She's been sitting on the nest box for a couple of weeks now, and I boot her out 2x daily so she'll eat and drink. She's got a bald spot growing on her neck. No rooster here...

chicken listless, not eating scratch, vomit liquid, diarrhea

I don't know when her last egg was. I've been getting 5-7 eggs from the 9 chickens all together lately, but haven't been keeping track of who lays when on an individual basis. You would recommend treating for sour crop even though her crop felt empty this morning? It seems from many posts...

chicken listless, not eating scratch, vomit liquid, diarrhea

Last night around 7 pm (18 Sept), one of my 7.5 month-old Buff Orpingtons was standing alone, staring off into space, when I went to the run to give everyone their scratch. The other 8 chickens (2 buff orpingtons, 2 rhode island reds, 2 silver laced wynadottes, and 2 easter eggers) were normal...

Purina’s new mill date code uses Julian calendar

@SueT Thanks for posting this! I was literally just at the feed store looking at mill dates and prices, and was confused by Purina's date. A lot of old posts here at Backyard Chickens still discussed the single-digit year code they used to use, and those were all I found on my phone in the...

Winter chicks: reducing daylight hours to prevent early egg laying

@Aunt Angus and @Poodlemum Thanks to you both for your info! We currently have ~12 hour days in Albuquerque. It's sounding like most people don't worry about the light and day length for chicks hatched in the off-season, and don't have problems with early egg laying, binding, prolapse, etc. I...

Winter chicks: reducing daylight hours to prevent early egg laying

Rose @Rose Quartz : Thanks Rose, it's good to hear your personal experience. @Poultrybonkers : I know I'm a newbie here, but everything I've read says that daylight hours is a factor in egg laying. @Huntmaster : Do you have any experience with hatching winter chicks and needing to reduce...

Winter chicks: reducing daylight hours to prevent early egg laying

Hi all, I have a question that I haven't found yet on the forum about controlling lighting and the length of the day for winter chicks. There's a note in Gail Damerow's "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" (in the "Laying-Hen Management" chapter, "Lighting for Pullets" section) that says, "If...
