My current flock of pullets are from two batches-first on March 13th and second on April 1st 2010- and consists of 6 Barred Rocks, 6 Buff Orpingtons, 6 Anconas (one's a rooster) 3 Leghorns, 3 Easter Eggers, 2 Black Sex Links and 1 Blue Andalusian. Our last flock sad to say was eaten by a...
My dog got skunked last night and a few nights ago when I went to shut the coop door at about 9pm there was a baby skunk cuddled in the coop with my Mama hen and her 5 baby chicks. I screamed and it ran away. My husband thought that maybe the mama skunk had died (there are 3 or 4 dead skunks...
BigDaddy'sGurl :
The OP has ONE rooster and 21 hens...
Try tossing them some dry cat food for added protein.
I have seen that posted elsewhere-any particular brand?

I am thinking it may have been mites. It's been almost two weeks since I treated them and I am starting to see growth in some of the chickens. I spread some more DE on the floor of the hen house. I also left an ash bath with a little Sevendust in it but I don't see the hens using it...

I have never seen a rat or a mouse in the yard! Doesn't mean they aren't there though. I have seen a few black snakes however. There isn't an area that they are scraping against that I can see. Plus they would have to be scraping their behinds and backs which would be difficult.

That is a good point. There are no "peck marks" on any of the chickens. I've also watched them for extended periods of time and they only time I see any kind of pecking is when I throw out sunflower seeds or scratch-and it isn't a feather peckiing it's a "I am eating here get out of...

I have looked at night but in the vent area not so much at the base of the feather. I also changed the coop litter (I use shavings) and spread DE across it all last week. I treated them with Sevendust about 1 1/2 ago. So if I did have mites hopefully the problem is taken care of.
I...
Here's some photos.
As you can see the rooster is filling out as are some of the hens. Some of their heads are bald too (look at BO in the rooster photo.
Any help would be appreciated!
My chickens started molting last spring. They are still bare (most are bare right above and below the tail)-at least most of them and winter is coming (I live in the southern Rockies). Some have (finally!) started growing feathers but most have not. I researched and have done the following...
So I debated about putting the eggs under the hen last night but decided not to. I wish I had cause when I got up the temp inside the box was a little over 85. When I went to bed it was 100. I don't hear anything and am no longer going to lift the lid for today to keep the environment stable...
Thanks everyone! I will keep you posted if anything transpires!!! Hopefully we will have a few more chicks to add to the flock. The five that hatched already are the toast of the hen house! All the other ladies are so excited and come to visit the Momma hen and her young ones.
So the temp is now 100 degrees in the plastic box. I am not hearing anything or seeing any piping. How long do I leave them there before throwing in the towel?
It is day 20 and all the other eggs hatched today.

Put a thermometer in there too so you know what that temp is. Try to keep it around 100. If you have a plastic box with a lid you could place wet sponges in it and the egg and put the lamp over them. Don't close the lid but put it over to help hold the heat and humidity in the box for...
