My dog is killing my CHICKENS!

My dogs are all trained on a shock collar in combination with positive reinforcement . Some might not agree with this method but it has worked well for us. The important thing is to teach the command “leave it”first. You can look up videos as to how to do this with treats. Make sure your dog...

    Rooster or hen?

Im going with pullet. No pointy saddle feathers that I can see. I feel like at that age, they would surely be there.

To winterize (the run) or not…

I just wrapped our run with clear thread reinforced tarps on the north and west sides. There is an auto door on the north side for the birds to go from the covered run into the fenced, open top chicken yard so I wanted something that would protect the auto door. I attached old kennel panels at...

How many roosters did you cull before getting a good one?

just wanted to update- We ended up culling the mottled Java cockerel. Was really hard on me, but it was the right choice. So far the other guy is showing all the signs of being a good rooster. He calls the girls, lets them eat treats, dances and seems to watch for predators. He still runs...

    Rooster fending off fox?

We just ate our first cockerel that we butchered due to being aggressive with our children (we’ve now killed two.) he was about 8 months old. What shocked me was the color of the meat when I went to cook him. So dark. I cooked him in the crock pot all day, with onions and herbs, then pulled...

How many roosters did you cull before getting a good one?

This is really interesting about not letting the rooster mount hens in front of you. Makes perfect sense and I will start that immediately. It does seem like they try to do it more when people are around. Maybe it is their way of showing they’re on top of the pecking order. I’ll be sure to have...

How many roosters did you cull before getting a good one?

Thank you all! Sounds like everyone has a little different experience. My Java bit me today when I was sitting down visiting with the flock, and he circled back around behind me. I put my hand out to block him from getting behind me and he bit my hand. Don’t have to time to get him processed...

How many roosters did you cull before getting a good one?

This past spring, we had to call our young rooster, because he started being aggressive with humans. We got some more spring chicks and two ended up being cockerels. one of the Cockerels we didn’t handle at all because I suspected he was a he from very early (he was our single broody hatched...

Disaster! Integrating broody and chicks to flock not going well

She kicked her babies to the curb at three weeks. So I added her three to the other chicks who were a month older than them. What a lot of chicken drama!

How long before vent gleet is serious?

No bugs that I can find. It’s white and gooey right around her vent and in the feathers underneath. Definitely doesn’t look like stool. I can’t tell if there’s an odor, but I’m sick and VERY congested 😬. I’ll try to get a photo tomorrow. Her stools seem normal. Thanks for replying.

Disaster! Integrating broody and chicks to flock not going well

How did your reintroduction end up? I finally locked up four birds in a seperate mean girls club ( 😂) for 3 days and let my girl and all the chicks mingle with the rest of the flock. Those four seemed to be the bullies who were initiating the attacks (they were the next youngest group, so...

    Aggressive Brahma HEN?

Thank you! I’ve tried a few “head pecks” and ended up locking her and three other birds in jail (we called it mean girls club 😂) for three days due to them bullying another bird, and she’s much better now!

How long before vent gleet is serious?

I have sweet one-year-old salmon faverolles. She was broody and raised three chicks for a few weeks. Then the rest of the flock rejected her and we’ve been gradually trying to get her re-introduced. It appears now that she has a vent gleet. I’m guessing due to the stress of being bullied. we...

    Aggressive Brahma HEN?

All right experts- I have a light Brahma hen (pullet actually- 10 months) that is coming after me and my kids when we come into the run. She goes after feet and pecks hard. And she’ll chase you when you turn your back (like our cockerel did before he went to freezer camp) She was broody a few...

Disaster! Integrating broody and chicks to flock not going well

Thanks for your input. I have tried several things over the past week. I have started introducing this broody and her chicks to the older chicks. She chases them off, but doesn’t seem to be hurting them. I’ve also tried re-introducing her to the main flock again, and it seems that things will go...

Disaster! Integrating broody and chicks to flock not going well

My broody currently is caring for three chicks 1 week and 1.5 weeks old. She’s in a seperate area within the coop and run and has been seperate within the flock for about 2-3 weeks. Yesterday I tried letting her and chicks out with the flock to mingle and the other birds started viscously...

    Broody hatched chick dead

So just to update- my broody went on to hatch only a single other chick. The rest of the eggs didn’t make it. That chick is thriving though, and she just adopted two more day olds 5 days after her chick hatched.

Can 4 week old chicks share coop space with broody and her single chick?

Thank you for the replies. I got another pen set up for the look but no see for all. Hopefully that will be enough to safely get them all used to each other within the coop. Luckily I have extra dog kennel panels laying around that make for an easy make shift barrier. I’ll prob give mama a few...

Can 4 week old chicks share coop space with broody and her single chick?

I’m absolutely not ok with this, hence why I am asking. Broodys raise chicks within the flock all the time, which is why I was wondering what that look like with older chicks. I’ll keep them seperate if needed, but no need to assume I’m ok with losing a chick because it’s practical. 😞
