    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Quote: He wants to try an Ohio show in November with a hatchery bird. So appreciate your comments...expectations on winning will be low & we will focus on the experience only. If you are located where I think you are you are only about 2 hours from the largest show of the year at Indianapolis...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Quote: I saw a very good white frizzle last year get best featherleg at a show of over 1500 birds but it doesn't happen all that often. I think it is more about the quality/type of the bird rather than whether it is frizzle or smooth. Frizzle are accepted in the standard and are not frowned...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Quote: My SOP is still packed away in box somewhere????? buy I'm pretty sure they are not a recognized variety. I don't know if you can even call frizzle a variety because you can see frizzle in every variety (color). It's more of a condition of the feathers I think. I would say that your son...

    Which breed???

We have 3 golden comets, about 6 months old. We have had an egg every day, from each, except for a period of time when the heat index was 100+. They slowed down to 1-2 a day then. They are very consistent layers, huge eggs and very friendly girls.

How long do we wait on the eggs to hatch?

Next time try candling with a small flashlight. We about gave up on some eggs too and by candling we were able to determine there were chicks inside. It took a couple of tries to get the light just right, but once you do it is so cool to see!

    Coop/Run Placement

I see shade as an advantage for a couple of reasons. We have a coop with two separate runs. One mostly shade and the other mostly sun. Those in the sunny side tend to spend more time in the coop and out of the sun when it is really hot. The shady side chicks are out more. And having a mostly...

    sick chick

Sorry to hear that. We had the same experience this year - just very lethargic and not doing the same things as the rest of the chicks. We tried giving her a bit of sugar water to see if that was the issue. Also tried yogurt mixed with feed but that did not work either. She passed away...

Rules for entering chickens in the fair

Yes, check your Fair premium book or show rules for classes and requirements. Our Fair required NPIP papers last year but only enforced it this year. So many kids were turned away this year as our Fair did not provide on the spot testing for anything. Keep copies too. They did not take the...

Is this buff brahma a rooster or hen?

I vote for Roo too. He looks exactly like our Buff roo who has the loudest crow and owns the coop...not docile at all; - )

Any examples of solar powered fans & heaters?

Has anyone had success setting up a solar panel to power a simple fan in summer or heater in winter? Is it worth the expense and effort? Thanks in advance! www.whitehousechickens.blogspot.com

Help! Aggressive Rooster is Breaking my 4H'ers Heart

Thanks for the links and suggestions. We went out this evening, with full body protection and gloves, and handled all roosters and hens. There was a little pecking, but we are going to keep at it and see if we can salvage our aggressive rooster.

Help! Aggressive Rooster is Breaking my 4H'ers Heart

We are new to chickens (4H project) and the lottery delivered 3 hens and 3 roosters. Until now we had one aggressive Brahma Roo. But overnight, we have an overly aggressive Black Frizzle Roo named Larry. And he was my son's favorite. Larry drew blood from me the other evening. This morning, he...
