I learned about a hatchery in Alaska the other day - Polaris hatchery. As a resident of Alabama, I will never shop there, but they looked pretty cool and had a lot of breeds. Even sold meat birds.
The blood can occur in various areas. You can also see blood in the white that is very similar to this. Go ahead and look up "follicle in egg" or "blood in white" or "blood in egg" and similar search terms on the Emergency Forum and elsewhere and see if you can look at a bunch of pictures...
A piece of follicle. It happens sometimes. It's usually a one-off. Always crack eggs in a separate container before use is good advice. It pays off in occasions like these.
You say you did a calcium treatment for 5 days. What dosage of calcium, how often, and how did you administer it? What type of calcium exactly? Oftentimes, if a hen is having issues such as this, recommendation is 500-600 mg Calcium citrate with vitamin D (human vitamin), one pill a day, pop...
Agreed. Those legs don't look correct. Compare with normal chicks, and it's pretty obvious something is just not right. Stance when sitting was not right also. Good information.
I use Tri-act-lock caribeaners. $23 each. Most expensive door lock ever. No one but humans will be getting through that. Totally overkill, but I will NOT have my coop decimated by a racoon!
As long as it re-enters the cycle of life, its life will not have been in vain. Some critter will get a tasty snack, or your tree will enjoy it. Kudos to you for helping it not suffer for something that can't be fixed. Poor thing.
What breed?
In broilers, CX, and meat birds, Varus Valgus deformity happens - look it up for into. It causes legs to grow in weird directions. I've had a few with weird legs from this cause. It's a genetic issue and shows up any time after hatch. I was seeing it in chicks a few months old...
I have hatched dirty eggs by drenching them in hydrogen peroxide and scrubbing them until they're clean. 90%+ hatch rate. I usually keep my eggs no older than 2 weeks, and look for good condition otherwise. But when we're having wet weather, if I only hatch perfect eggs, I wouldn't hatch any...
I treat my broilers just like my eggers - if they seem to have an issue, put Corid in the water, and make sure it's the only water source for at least a week. Check actual dose and duration on this site first. Works fine for me.
Good questions. The answers really depend on what resources you have available and your personal preferences. I raised 25 CX (23? - lost a few) to processing age. Brooded them in my unheated garage in an 8 ft x 3 ft space - they had outgrown that by week 3. I kept them until week 4 because...
Well, you use a leaf blower with your N95 particulate respirator, and then immediately strip off your outer clothes inside-out for immediate insertion into the washer, and then you immediately go take a shower. I use a leaf blower to blow leaves and debris off the top of my coop. I hose out my...
Welcome to BYC! I'm in North Alabama. The TN state line is just a step away. There's a number of folks from TN and GA and from N AL on here. If you need location specific advice for your coop or run, or help preventing/dealing with local predators, just reach out. You can update your...
Side note: If her comb does end up coming off, she can have a perfectly fine life without it. So sorry you're dealing with this!
I don't have answers about the rabies question. Hopefully others will contribute. I know any number of chickens have survived raccoon attacks without issue, for...
