Meat Bird Comparison: Freedom Ranger Hatchery White Ranger, FR New Hampshire, Cornish Rock Cross, and Ginger Broilers

This is really helpful, thank you! I think I need to find similar buckets, or use smaller stumps. Also, I love your coop!!! It's darling! What a nice layout for everything!

    Frost bite?

At 8-9 months, only slightly darker than shown in the picture, I still think it may be normal variation. Now, if it doesn't go away, or gets really dark, like almost black purple, then there's issues. But there's still really not much you can do about it but love her and keep her life free...

So glad to hear! Crossing fingers for you!!!

    Frost bite?

I agree with Sourland. It looks like you have some type of production red egger. How old is she? This amount of darker redness I do not find concerning, it can come and go normally as seasons change, hormones change, the weather changes, etc. She looks to be in perfectly good health, from...

Meat Bird Comparison: Freedom Ranger Hatchery White Ranger, FR New Hampshire, Cornish Rock Cross, and Ginger Broilers

Do you have pictures? I'm having trouble visualizing this, and it sounds really helpful. Because that's my trouble right now - they get up on the tree stumps and try to perch there and poop all over them. They're at least 12" in diameter or more.

Good ideas! I'm gonna have to ponder on these. Definitely want to do "steps", it's the mechanics that I haven't been able to decide on.

What age is a good age for processing excess heritage cockerels?

Since you're dealing with neighbors and no-rooster laws, as soon as they crow, they may need to go. I raised 21 babies, 12 of which were cockerels. By 3 months 5-6 of them were crowing, but they can start as soon as a few weeks old, it depends on the breed and individual birds. I ended up...

My experience killing and cooking young heritage breed cockerels

What kind of broth did you use? How often did you put the liquid on the meat when brazing it? Sounds tasty good!

My experience killing and cooking young heritage breed cockerels

I definitely want your recipe! I have trouble finding good recipes for birds on the older and tougher side, and I'd like to do something other than pressure cook them. Looks divine!!! Now I'm hungry... Sorry you had to process your cockerel. I had one that I'd had such high hopes for, we...

    Capons

They definitely feel it. One of the reasons I haven't moved forward with actually performing this myself. Doing it without anesthesia is actually safer for the bird - they have better survivability without anesthesia (due to difficulties in getting the dose correct and in administering it...

Meat Bird Comparison: Freedom Ranger Hatchery White Ranger, FR New Hampshire, Cornish Rock Cross, and Ginger Broilers

Trying to fit an isolation cage under there. Might have to just block off the top of that isolation cage (so they don't poop on it or perch on it at night) and then lower the sand box. Gives less walking around room to the hens, but maybe I'll think of something else that will make up for it.

Yeah, that's in my head too. Right now, they've been flying up on top of the 32" tall dog crate, and then flying onto the perch. Still pondering how to change that process, because right now they often want to stop on top of the dog crate. I worry about their legs and feet also. LOL that hen!

    Capons

If you hunt on here, you can find some good threads on the process and maybe an Article or two. I read about it ages ago, and what I remember is you have to have the right tools, perform the surgery between 3-5 wks of age, and you may loose a few birds before you get it right. If you've got...

Chicken perch with poop board - I finally made one (!!!) and have questions

Thank you all for your excellent suggestions on scoops and scoop alterations! I have ordered a reptile sifter, and may put some mesh on my cat litter scoops later on as needed. I finished my meat bird coop poop board also, and posted pictures on my meat bird comparison thread. For those who...

Meat Bird Comparison: Freedom Ranger Hatchery White Ranger, FR New Hampshire, Cornish Rock Cross, and Ginger Broilers

So, I finally built poop boards for my main egger coop and my meat bird coop. Thought you guys would like to see pictures. Also recent pictures of the birds. [When I say coop, I really mean covered run, as I don't have an actual coop per se, but rather a covered run that occasionally gets...

How long before New Hampshires are ready for slaughter

White to dark meat - pretty good balance, still heavy on the white meat, but large legs on the WR. Similar to CX but they walk around a lot more. I think the WR are relatively cold tolerant. Perhaps less tolerant of heat. I live where it only gets below freezing for a few months, and only a...

Chicken perch with poop board - I finally made one (!!!) and have questions

Hmmm. I don't know if I can do that now, but I'll bear it in mind for my next build. I have birds that are comfortable perching on zip line, which is less than 1/4" diameter, in the same coop. But my meat birds do like a wider branch closer to the ground.

Genetic related wry tail? Or just previous environment?

Not sure diet will fix that. If the bones etc form wrong, diet now that things have already formed won't fix the problem. Can't hurt to try though. I had one with Wry tail (see my profile picture). She had a tail but looked rumpless, and only ever grew 5 singular tail feathers. Laid great...

My Cracked-In-the-Head Olive Egger and Her Weird Nesting Spot. Want to help me name her?

So Heidi is now a year and a half old, and is finishing up her molt. She laid until very late in the year, and just took a break recently. She still doesn't like me much, but doesn't freak out about me too badly. Working on that with her. Very nice size and quality on the eggs, and a...
