He just does it and it seems harmless. He is healthy, the hens are healthy and I think its just a quirk. If it were something else, he would have gotten worse, died or it would have become obvious (what the problem was). Its the same as it was over a year ago so I am not going to worry about it.
my black australorp mates every chance he gets. My poor hens have no feathers on their backs and their once beautiful combs are a memory. He might wind up in the pot if he doesn't stop his aggressiveness---to us---he is very protective and aggressive. I think its a good quality to have in...
HI I have the same or similar issue. I have 14 hens- all are happy, sexually active (he is a busy guy) and all lay eggs- we get 8-10 eggs daily on average. None of the hens do this. He started it a few months ago, he is about 9 months old. I see zero issues with his head ie mites, or other...
HI I have buff orpington who is really bad. She walks around clucking, and lays in the nest with her feathers all sticking up to (I assume look big and bad). She comes out to eat and drink water, but hustles back to the nest- (No eggs)---She will lay an egg daily but I take it. I dont want...
At least they have feathers on their backs. I have 5 hens with very thin worn feathers. As you know its hot- and getting hotter, but I dont think this is a natural way they use to deal with the heat. I just got some misting fans from amazon- they work really great. The chickens hated them at...
The only place I know of where pigeons dont get it is in the house. They are very crafty. I will keep standing outside with coffee every morning and shooing them away. It will be 110-115 here soon- we will see what changes that brings. I wouldn't care if it were a few- but when its 20 of...
He is very sweet--he is a bit jumpy- but he is also young. Did I mention he is a ladies man? I guess i did or wouldn't be writing for advice. If anyone has any lonely hens- I have a solution.
I have a problem with pigeons. I have doves, wood peckers, creckles, and lots of others and I dont mind. WHY? Because they come 1-2 at a time. Pigeons come 20 at a time and can eat a lot very quickly. The irony is the chickens will chase babies or smaller chickens away from food but roll...
also use food grade diatom earth powder. It is like razor blades to bugs. Organic gardeners use it. I give it to mine in feed for internal parasites---(A tiny bit in about a gallon bucket of food (tiny bit is a teaspoon)---and I put a cup in their dust bath dirt. Use the sticky tape on the...
my barred plymouth rock is 4 months and is laying. The eggs are very very small- about walnut size. ping pong ball size or smaller even. My buff orpington was a year old before she laid and now she lays really nice large eggs. I think my naughty rooster has sort of jump started her...
I have a young hen about 3-4 months old who just started laying. she laid an egg with no shell. She has laid 5 eggs in her life plus the one without the shell. I give them calcium in their feed- mixed in- from tractor supply and also diatom earth- for parasites like a teaspoon per gallon of...
I really appreciate all of your expertise and help. My wife wants to make tacos out of him. I say- give him time. The 5 hens- all are laying now- the barred plymouth rock and nh red lay very small pigeon size eggs--about the size of walnuts. One or two didn't even have shells so they are...
We have an area about 5000 sq ft for them. They have free reign- with plenty of shade, water, and food. Its really not a bad life.
Now if I could get rid of the pigeons and tame shadow (his name) a little- everyone would return to happiness and peace. Its amazing that literally within a...
thank you- we do have some hens that look a few inches shorter and a lot rounder- due to tail feathers missing. He just started crowing day before yesterday- its more like an off key bugle being blown than a crow sound- but I am sure he will figure it out. Ironically the only one with combs...
HI- I have 12 chickens. 6 younger ones all pullets (2.5 months and less- which are in a separate pen for now). The 6 older ones are as follows:
