I have multiple roosters all of whom seem to "Breed". With that in mind how long do I have to isolate hens with my RIR roo to insure the eggs I want to incubate are his??? I intend to make sex links, pruebreds, and "75%ers" for lack of A better way to describe it.
As A sidebar...
Dark spot in the yolk. Cracked 3 earlier today didn't see one, though admittedly I knew 1 would be unlikely to be fertilized. That hen is separated from the roosters..
Simple any tricks to induce A rooster to "perform" regularly before spring???? A large chunk of my hens have cleared their first molt and I ordered an incubator. My RIR does not seem to be "Performing" with anywhere near his spring-to-summer frequency and I'd rather start the replacement...
Looks like A roo. I had 3 roo LB/Aust mixes.............. Didn't end well. Apparently LB Roos can have very nasty dispositions and when are the size of an austrolorp with that disposition that was not A good mix for the hens.
None of my Austrolorp girls had A comb that high for well after 7 weeks. The 3 roos I had were Blk Aust/Crm LB did though. Nasty mix as it turned out, vicious to my hens so they became meat. Their RIR replacement has worked out quite well. As I just pointed out though my 3 were mutts, not...
What I'm learning thus far is certain birds are just better producers, the best layers I have currently seemed to distinguish themselves before even laying, "Studs" for lack of A better term, yes I realize the gender reference is off but the right adjective is not leaping to mind. If I had...
GSLs and RSLs heavily frontload egg production, IIRC it is odd they survive to 3 years old. Their metabolism essentially cooks them and something usually reproductive related kills them. IME seems like my GSLs consume more water than the other birds too. Isa Browns and White Leghorns can...
The part your not told when you buy "Ideals" rather than Leghorns is that ANCONAS LAY LITERALLY HALF of what leghorns do. I think my two got A disproportionate amount of Ancona DNA. These 2 birds are 8 months old and are not milting yet. Like I said I'm not certain 1 has actually laid yet...
My line of thinking was it may have had something to do with the white streaking in their combs. Searching that turns up "spots", these are NOT spots. More like the dead skin remnants leftover after scabbing. Problem is I am fairly certain they were over fowl pox weeks ago.
I have seen no sign of worms or mites, Ivermectin is great stuff and low risk so I guess it's worth A try. I'm disinclined to keep bird that just stop laying entirely for several months A year though. The idea was to cultivate A food source and do A mobile coop setup so I can turn yard into...
No sign of worms and no sign of mites either. Every so often I dust the birds with DE. With the smaller of the two I think it is just that she is bullied and refuses to stand her ground even when much of the flock is passive. My RIR Roo seems to make sure they get the chance to eat, but he...
